Well, I finally decided to see what my Plextor could do... I decided to share with you guys.

I decided to burn Return to Castle Wolfenstein using Ahead Nero 5.5.8.0 and Plextor firmware version 1.01. I just did a CD to CD copy using my ASUS CD-S500/A (50X CD-ROM) twice using a TDK 32X 80min/700MB 100% certified CDR and an Imation 16X 80min/700MB CDR. Yes, I went ahead and burned at 40X and both CDs successfully copied the game (and yes, it's readable under WindowsXP Professional).

So here's the stats...
TDK CD R...
average 3% CPU utilization taking 3min 40sec to burn the 662MB game
Imation CD R...
average 5% CPU utilization taking 3min 44sec to burn the 662MB game.

The change in CPU utilization sort of puzzles me. I'm guessing it has something to do with the Plextor's PowerRecII controller?????

Your Plextor isn't hitting 40X speeds. Chances are it's topping out at 32X or even 24X. I have this drive and despite what NERO says (40X 6000KB/S) the speed is lower UNLESS I use 40X certified media. The drive monitors the media and switch the speed up or down if the media cannot handle it.

Are you using WinXP and have a network? If so, you can put a large image file on a network share and burn that (across the network) to a CD. Be sure to tell NERO NOT to cache network files! You can use the WinXP Task manager to see the network utilisation. You will also see when the drive changes recording speed zones as well. The drive is a four zone drive. (20/24/32/40)

Cheers!

<< when the hell will 40X media be available? >>

One came with my drive.

I understand they are manufacturing them now. It should be only a matter of a few weeks and you will see them everywhere. I'm not complaining however since I have about 3500 12X certified discs that will burn at 24X with this drive. By the time I'm through with these, 50X disks will probably be out! 🙂

Cheers!

Ah, I guess I got a 40X piece of media as well then. I was surprised to see that the media just said "Plextor" on it and didn't really specify what the CDR was rated at (nor did it say on the box or manual)... the 12X CDRW did say "12X" on it. I try to not use those media so that I can include them in the retail package when I sell the drive like my 16X Plextor which is going up for sale very soon.

ANyone have news on what media is best and is not too expensive for thsi drive?
"just wanting the fastest burn times

I have this drive too...love it even though media has not caught up...although it doesn't have the cool internal fan the 24x had 🙁
