Magic users are weak in the beginning and then scale up as the game goes. Trial and error is your best friend. You will want to rely heavily on a pet if you have one.

Pure mage is by far the hardest character to start with in any DnD game.

Suggestions:
1) Play a Cleric (Priest). They are stronger, and still have some magic.
2) Play a Mage/Fighter multiclass character. (you have to choose an elf or half-elf to do this)

I played as Cleric and it was good character to pick, the fighting and magic skills are handy, besides near the end you will need them all ;).

Cleric sounds interesting but i dont see myself as being one :( "role-playing way of saying it" fighter/mage idea is great. where should i start as being one? as to what should i create and when to multiclass?? Ahhh being a noob in NWN is amazingly annoying :p.

You multiclass immediately.

I haven't played NWN, but basically, pick an Elf or Half-Elf, and it should give you the option of selecting more than one class.

Be aware though, that multiclass characters kick ass in the beginning, but they need a lot of experience to level (since both classes level with full experience), so in the end, the character is not as strong.

HIRE HELP. Single best thing you can possibly do in the beginning.

Edit: Make sure you hire the appropriate guy, ie a strong hunk of meat that will keep the baddies busy while you blast away. My mage is at level 15 and has had good luck with the Half-Orc.

I'm using a lvl 4 wizard now, and I'm kicking butt!!! sort of... hehehe.. no henchman yet. I want to level up to lvl 20 before I finish this game. power word kill, motion stop seems fun.

You don`t really need a henchman if you get the right character,I played it without one through most of the game, infact I only had one now and then to open some locks that needed very high lockpick skills.

www.gamefaqs.com has a humongous selection of faqs, walkthroughs etc.

btw, I finished NWN as a fighter and as a mage without any hired help. So its possible to do it.

I have this game installed and everything on my comp, but just haven't played it yet. I'm deciding between waiting to play it this summer or start playing this and eventually flunk out of engineering. Hmm...
