Putting Windows XP updates on a CD

I've got a friend that has a legal version of Windows XP home edition. She is on a dialup connection. Is there anyway I can download all of the windows updates including the service pack and put them on a CD to take to her house and install. She started to do windows update with her dialup and she needed 48 updates. Not really feasable to download over dialup.

you can definately download the service pack and burn it on a cd, that should take care of a big chuck of updates. the rest you should be able to hunt down manually, try searching on the MS site for the kb number (knowledge base).

Yes u can.

The service pack 1 should be the easiest to find. For all the other patches it's a bit more complicated. Let her run the update page. It'll show what updates are recomended. Note down the numbers of those patches. Then go for microsoft and search for them and download them one by one. Will take u some time but way better than dialup I guess 😀

Service packs are small updates with minor corrections.......................only around 130 MB worth!

That what happens when you program is bloated!

wow that's helpful!

it might be easier to just bring her machine over and hook it up to your network, download the updates there and then take it back home. unless of course she doesn't live right down the street. then you're back to looking up all the different updates. altho once you get the service pack loaded, the rest shouldn't be too bad.

Lot o retardation somewhere in this thread. Won't say where, it should be obvious.

Yes, you can do exactly what you are trying to do.
Download the 'network install' (aka full) version of xp sp1.

Next, visit
this site, click on the "search by product/technology". Punch in your OS, service pack level (sp1)and check the patch severities you would like then click 'Go'. You can then download each of the updates you need.

If she's trying to do this on her own while you're rounding this stuff up be sure she is using the ICF at least until she gets the 842146 (MS03-039) patch in place.

I know the feeling. I download my updates to my jump drive (512mb) at work with out a problem. Then all I do is download them. Easier and cheeper than a burner. Hope this helps.

Service Pack 2 is coming out soon (in beta now)... just to let you know.
Yes, that is true. According to Microsoft it is slated for release in "the first half" of 2004. That means at the earliest, in the first half. Delays are possible. Besides, SP2 coming sooner or later, does not justify waiting and running a Windows XP computer that is not properly updated with current patches and updates. Do yourself, your friend, and really, the internet community a favor, by downloading the updates for her and installing them. Critical updates are a must, others may be good for some improvments or minor fixes, but anything critical and security related should not be put off because SP 2 is coming out.
