If you are using it for music you don't need surround. You can get a quite good stereo system for $800 if you choose components well.

there is also a good chance that i wont get it for about 6 months, as i have a job but i work roughy 6 hours a week so it will take a long time to save up for it. that is why my buget is flexible. i really like the idea of slowly upgrading the system i will continue to reasearch, as last year this time i was just in the begining stages of learned about computers...yea i agree that it might be too big for a dorm/apparment but i still need to reasearch more.

Just get a 2.1 system (logitech z-2300s or klipsch promedia) for now. That'll cost around $100-150 and will be of good use until you

a) have space for more speakers
b) decide what you want
c) live somewhere that you'll actually be able to turn up the volume and appreciate all this time, effort, and (most importantly) money spent

It's nice that you want a good system but you're what, 16 or 17? I promise you'll need that money for something other than speakers (esp if you move away from home) when you're in college.

Most receivers do come with volume knobs which some people don't seem to understand.

You get to decide how loud is appropriate. It's quite ingenious. Just be responsible with the volume level. You can be an annoyance in a building with just about any powered speaker system if you want to be.

There is probly a good chance that i will be going to the local JC, and living at home for a few more years and i dont have top notch grades. Music for most people is one of thos things you cant live with out. i think this is one of the things that i need to invest in and i want it to last a long time so i dont have the rplace it in 2 years. i want the speakers to last 10-15 years.

So it sounds as if you will only be using these speakers for listening to music, correct? Are you still wanting a 7 or 5 speaker setup? 2.1 is the best way to go for just music.

In general it seems like you get more for your money if you get an online brand. The tricky part is getting a real demo.

I did some demo-ing of several retail brands (Boston, Klipsch, Monitor Audio, Paradigm, etc.) before doing an in home demo of Onix Rockets at someone's house and I liked them a lot better than the ones I had heard before.
Yeah, it would have been a better test to have them all in the same room but that would have been pretty difficult to have happen.

If you want to get overwhelmed, hang out in AVSforum for the next few months while you're researching. You'll get dozens of brands to consider, especially if you change your goal to a 2.0 setup on an $800 budget. If you really want to build up your system over time, a quality receiver and pair of stereo speakers will be fairly easy to find for $800 vs 7.1 on an $800 budget.

AVSforum, ok thanks i will head over there and see what i can find. yeah i deccied to jump the buget to 1200 MAX for a nice reciever and 3.1 set up that will give me room for a wide range of upgrades. and all that means is i have to work a little bit harder but that is good for me.

I know you want a surround sound system, but unless you buy a receiver over $500 it will probably have horrible amps for the surround and center speakers. You need to spend more than your budget allows if you want surround amps with full bandwidth and nice quality. Most cheap receivers don't give out any specs on the surround amps except 100wpc @ 1khz which really doesn't mean much. And if your going to get a $300 receiver you might as well get cheap surround speakers because it won't make much difference. The other 3-5 amps is where most of your money is going to go when you move up in price range. Might have a little more headroom and inputs between a $300 and $800 receiver but thats about it.. Thats why I personally would rather put money into a nice DAC and wires. Do not be playing cd's from your analog outputs on your $100 DVD player! And don't buy monster wires either, thats just overpriced. If you get a sub, you want a totally adjustable crossover and phase control. Phase is EVERYTHING I swear! Also the reason for some good connections/wires. If your speakers are slightly out of phase distortion will be obvious. I would spend the most money on getting a good set of front speakers (which you could later move to rear if you were serious about a awesome surround setup). My circuit city has alot of good deals on open box specials (BB never really does, its always cheap stuff anyways), don't know if you have one near you. I bought a pair of Infinity Interlude IL10 speakers (same tweets as there top of line preludes if I remember right) $200 there a couple years ago and they are great for movies. Awesome very accurate vocals. They don't make these anymore though and I don't think their newer models compare.

You might want to check used sites like audiogon, videogon, and classifieds areas of different forums to see if you can snag a deal. Getting slightly used equipment is a great way to stretch your dollar.

Where are you located again?

I know sorry, but come on...."i need to feel the music, be one with it." I love music as much as the next guy, but if I said something like this it would officially be time to hand in my man card.

I'd say it would be highly dependent on the music being played.

True, anyway the receiver he had picked out is pretty nice. I would seriously doubt that his fellow dorm members will appreciate listening to your music also, you are going to have to get a pair of headphones dude.

Go out and listen to some stuff. Get familiar with what some of the terms mean in real life (bright, laid back, etc.) Listen to some cheap stuff and some stuff that's above your pricerange. Get an idea of what sounds good to you and you'll probably be able to eliminate some stuff and get a focus on what kind of stuff appeals to you.

If you're thinking of considering online companies you'll be able to get a general idea of what they might sound like before you try to get an in-home demo or order a pair to try them.
Axiom has a brighter sound while Ascend is more neutral for example. Ascend is supposed to be generally similar to the Paradigm Studio series from what I have read.

I have no idea on that sub.

You want to know what to look for?

Try to get a demo of B&W, Paradigm, Klipsch, JBL, Infinity, Polk, Boston Acoustics, and whatever else you can easily get access to.
Nobody is going to be able to tell you specifically a product that you should be concentrating on without knowing the kind of sound you like.

So you want some sort of guidelines for what to be listening for?
