Its my first build. I am getting ready to seat the processor. XP2500+. Do I need the little gray square on the HSF? It seems this is where I would use Artic Silver instead.

It sounds like you're using the retail hsf!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Well, if you must, then erase that gray square with some acetone or solvent of your choice. Then slap some of your ASx on. If the gray square is not currently stuck on the hsf, don't put it on.

just use arctic silver, that will work much better hten the square crap.

There are TONS of options here. I've had mostly Thermalright's and Zalman's. Check out this site for some good articles on quiet computing. Buy one at your favorite online store.

Guessing that the "grey square" is a thermal pad (kind of waxy or chewing gum like material?) then yeah remove it.
