Putting in 1 weeks notice?

So, I am currently employed but have been going on interviews. For some reason, the company I am at hires some people part time for a few months before bringing them on-board. Honestly, I think its BS, but I work in IT and do some pretty important things here. On top of that, I am locked into working less than 26 hours a week which is less hours than I was allowed to work in College.

I have been speaking with another company and an offer was made. The pay is more than I am getting right now, 40+ hours a week, bennies, and they will help pay for certs (Cisco Gold Partner). They want to know if I could start right away. I am thinking about coming to work on Monday and telling them that Friday will be my last day.

I have only been here maybe 3.5 weeks. I figured telling them I was leaving on Friday would be okay since I barely work and I am only part time.

I mostly need to leave here ASAP because I would like to start my benefits paperwork at the new job so I can start insurance and everything on the 1st of the month.


What are your thoughts on this? I probably won't get a good reference from this place, but thats fine with me. I have tons of other references. What do I have to lose?

part-time, newly hired... obviously it's not ideal, but I don't see a major problem with just giving 1 weeks notice.

it'd be different if you were in a senior-level position and had to train a replacement, pass down on-going projects, etc.

Working at a place less than a month - 1 week notice is fine. Two weeks is the standard at most jobs. As Loki said, if you were a key manager, etc, then more than that would be required.

I will probably do this. I was not sure what the proper etiquette is. I am fresh out of College and all I was ever taught to do was give 2 weeks. I honestly thought it was required.

Think about it this way, if your current employer was going to fire you would they be kind enough to give you two weeks notice? (Please note I said fire, not lay off in this case.)

Unless you're absolutely going to require this current job as a reference or you're doing someone there a solid (was brought in by a good friend/family/etc), treat it like working at Burger King. Odds are you're going to give notice and they'll tell you to pack your shit and leave on the spot anyway.

If I was your supervisor I wouldn't get too fussed about you leaving for a better job.

"best practice," maybe, but not required.

in some position, employees may be expected to give more notice if the situation allows, and in others (like a newly-hired, part-time employee), it doesn't matter so much.

You should be polite and let them know. Don't just walk out and not show up again. However you shouldn't feel obliged to give 2 weeks. In your case 2 weeks hurts you. One week wastes your time. I've had companies try to get me to stay for much longer when I gave them notice but I politely explained to them that I had new opportunities, would organize whatever work I had left so that the next person could take it over easily, and move on in 2 weeks. In your case zero days is fine.

You should be polite and let them know.

Okay, so going in on Monday and telling HR that I am quitting and that Monday will be my last day is perfectly fine? That's what I really want to do, tbh... I only work from 9-2. So, I'd just turn in my badge and stuff and leave at the end of the day. I spent too much money coming out here. After reading this thread, I don't even want to stay till the end of the week.

When you get a formal offer for a new job, let your current company know you are going to accept and ask if they would like you to stay on to finish anything up but that otherwise you will be leaving. If they ask you to stay, feel free to negotiate how long you are willing to remain. I would cap it at a week though, anything longer is a huge waste of your time.

if it makes you feel any better, my last McJob hated me when I left.

I was only able to give one week's notice and I came down with a ridiculously bad cold during that week. I had to call out sick on my second-to-last day, and while I showed up for my last day because I felt like I had to, I was so sick that I wasn't able to get much done.

of course, my supervisor thought I was just being a lazy a-hole who didn't have any fucks to give, and I heard through friends that she was cursing up a storm over me after I left. but in the end, it was just a McJob and it had zero impact on my overall professional career.

Regarding the former: Unless whatever you're working on is critical and nobody else can pick up and do it, I don't think it would be a problem. Sounds like they're a high-turnover place anyway which is why they have this part-time policy anyway. They're used to it.

Regarding the latter: Yeah, that's perfectly fine. You might have a couple papers HR wants you to sign off on. You'd probably be fine even going in today and telling them that you got a job offer for a better opportunity elsewhere and they want you to start Monday, so you're done there. Get the ball rolling with the new job. Look out for yourself and put your best interests in play. Either way, if they hold it against you tough shit.

I give 2 weeks and hope they just ask me to leave right away, if they have you stay on it means you were actually needed. So far I havent been escorted right out.

They shouldn't cap your hours at 26 a week if they really want you or give you important tasks.

1 week is 6 days more then they deserve.
