I have a MSI KT3 and a XP 1600 that was running fine when all of a sudden the thing stopped working (I never smelled or saw any smoke though). I went over to my friends house and tested my motherboard and cpu on his comp. The moment he turned on his mobo with my cpu something started smoking and burning. He claimed that my cpu had fryed his motherboard, but i dunno for sure. He also claims that the same thing probably happened with my mobo. So, when I get a new cpu should I not risk trying it out on my mobo? Should I wait till I get a new mobo?

Well, I've never heard of a CPU just going bad and killing a mobo, not in my experience.

Try booting a motherboard up without the processor installed. Make sure the system speaker (inside the computer) is hooked up to the motherboard. Attempt to boot and you should hear beep codes if the motherboard is working correctly.
