Putting a DVD burner in a ATA 133 system

I want to add a DVD burner to my ATA 133 system. Presently, I have 3 ATA 133 drives. One on my primary and two on the secondary channel. I believe if I add the burner to my primary channel it will slow to the speed of the ATA 133 drive to that of the burner (UDMA 2). Is that correct?

If I add one of those cards that will go in a PCI slot to my PC, put the burner on it, will my other drives stay at ATA 133 (UDMA 6) while the burner runs at UDMA 2?

No, that is not correct. Not any more, and not as long as you use the proper (ie 80 wire) cables. Modern ATA spec allows for independent timings for drives. Each will perform at it's maximum speed (which incidentally, is nowhere near ATA133 speeds promised. The drives can not currently saturate the ATA66 bus. But that's another story for another post...)

often times, IDE controllers do not support ATAPI (optical drives, ZIP drives, etc). Be sure to check that one you may purchase does. It's not needed, however, due to my above stated explaination.

Thanks for the help, I am using the cables that came with my Maxtor drives. I have two LP120 and a LP160. They currently run at UDMA 6 (according to XP device manager). How can I tell if I have the correct 80 pin cables?

Also, I see the PX-708 comes in a flavor that will work on firewire/USB2. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to this configuration?

even if it were correct, who cares.. UDMA 133 is totally useless anyways.

I hate the entire ATA crap.. I wish it would have never been introduced into the public.. everyone thinks they should rush out and buy an ATA/133 drive when Rotation speed is literally 99% more important than ATA speed.

bah.

but no, it won't slow the channel down to the lowest speed (of the burner) 🙂

which ones ? Ive had a couple promise cards and they all supported cd drives quite ok (even with additional kicks like bootable cd detect and ask if ya wanna boot from it)

If the wires in the cables are very thin, then they're 80 wire. Also, to run a drive at ATA 66 or higher, you need an 80 wire cable, so Maxtor's cables will definately be fine.

Another way to tell is that 80 wire cables that are standards compliant have a blue, black and grey connector (if he had rounded cables for example, he'd have a hard time checking the number of wires, but I doubt Maxtor is shipping with rounded cables anyhow...), and since you are using thecables that came with your Maxtor drives, you're all good 😉
