Honestly, after playing with "wifi remotes" for various devices for the last few months, I'm starting to wonder why we even have IR anymore.

Surprised you don't have to pair the remote to the TV? That would have made more sense (although less user friendly for novice users).

This annoys me. I can't get my dang DirecTV remote to work with my TV. Yet people can pull out their smart phones and turn off every TV in a bar. :p

what happens when there are multiple items that are controlled by remotes? like DVRs or receivers. paring required?

I had one of the early pocket PC's in highschool with IR and an app that contained something like 20,000 profiles for devices. There wasn't any device in the school I couldn't control from under my desk.

These types of things have been available for years. One of my friends had a little thing on his keychain that would send the "off" command for the most popular ~50 televisions several years ago. Here's something like it at Thinkgeek:

Yeah, but you actually have to plan ahead to be a jerk with that stuff.

Now, everyone with a S4 or One can cause TV havoc whenever bored...
