we would like it to be free....but it costs $$ for a reason. because it can decode Mpeg2 ( a certain type perhaps) Nvidia must pay royalties to the people who own the rights to the Mpeg2 thingy

nvidia have to pay, if they made it free for us.....they would be out of pocket
 
The NVDVD player is considered one of the best there is. (Works on most video cards including ATI)

If you are happy with your current DVD player software there would be no reason to upgrade, but if you want better image quality and some more features it would be worth looking at. You can download a free trial and see for yourself.

You don't have to pay for MPEG2 (unless you are licensing the decoder from someone else). You *do* have to pay to release something that can play DVDs.

I'm not sure NVIDIA sells their MPEG2 decoder (which is one of the best available) without the DVD player part as well. They charge extra for the PureVideo functionality because they're greedy bastards. 😛
