I bought this dog about 6 months ago and as she has grown I have began to doubt that she is a pure basset hound. To me she looks like a mix between basset and dachshund. What does ATOT think?

If she isnt a pure, is there anyway that I can find out for sure and go after the breeder to get my money back?

Or you could take the dog to a professional instead of asking the ATOT Doctors/Lawyers.

Thats the problem. I have no idea who to go too. I have already contacted the AKC and am waiting a response from them.

Doesn't look like a basset hound at all. Looks like a mutt to me. Didn't you meet the parents of the dog? That's dog buying basics...

That is what I have been saying for awhile. Besides her ears and her front paws, I dont see anything else basset on her.

You got screwed. Looking at Basset Hound photos on google I can't see how there's any chance its a pure bred Basset. The ears/eyes/snout alone look pretty conclusive. Looks like a fun dog though. I'd be pissed if I paid $500-$800 for it being a pure breed though.

Or you could not post as you obviously have nothing to contribute.

OP...I do not see any basset hound there, all I see is a dachshund but there is something in the face that is throwing me off.

Bingo! I love this dog. She is so much fun and over all it doesnt matter that much if she isnt a pure now. I just want my money back. Also going to work on getting the breeders AKC license pulled.

Definately NOT a basset purebred. You might be able to get a local vets opinion on breed, but AKC's your best bet.

Have you tried talking to the breeder? Maybe it was an honest mistake, and now that it's obvious the dog is not purebred basset they will refund some or all of your money.

It very well might not work, but they should at least have the opportunity to fix the situation before you go reporting it and trying to get their license pulled.

I like this idea. Sometimes things are as easy as simply asking.

It seems pretty unlikely that this was an honest mistake if they knew what they were doing at all. So either they are incompetent or dishonest, either way they shouldn't be breeding dogs for profit.

Dachshund/Bassett Hound mix. Long ears and coloring look Bassett Hound, remainder looks Dachshund.

OP - did you go to breeder's location, see the parents, pups, etc?

Lots of backyard breeders trying to make a buck. How much did you pay? And you receive paperwork?

fwiw - there are companies that will provide you with dog's genetic breed make-up. I don't believe the expense is less than $100 but who knows how reliable they are.

I'd probably try and get my money back directly from them first. Then go after them if they don't comply. Of course I'd do this only if the whole thing costs less than just letting it go.

Let's put it this way, first I looked at the picture and said to myself "That Dachshund looks like it has a little something else mixed in it," then I read your post. I can see the Basset influence in the eyes, ears and coloring, but everything else looks much more Dachshund, > 50% even.
