Got accepted and I'm going to submit my $75 fee for housing now because it's on a first come first serve basis. You Purdue students can help me...

What is the best residence hall?

My priorities are:
- BIG room
- Coed
- Good food

As for food. I wouldnt say that any of the dorms had exceptionally good food, but it was decent. However Cary Quad does have probably the best food and selection and its right across the way from Owen Hall. Also its nice living in Owen cause its right by the stadium so you dont have to walk real far to get to the football games.

edit: If you guys have any questions feel free to contact me via email, AIM, or PM.

When I visited Purdue for Fall Preview Day, I got to see Shreve Hall and my tour guide said it has one of the biggest rooms, problem is that the rooms were puny. Which co-ed and men's hall have the largest rooms?

I thought the campus was pretty nice...unless you mean the other colleges have godly campuses.

just from looking at pictures on the website, purdue looks startingly similar to the uw's except there's less trees. *shrug* we have a nice campus though :)

Largest rooms are in Hillenbrand, but thats an upperclassman dorm. The rooms in Owen are probably the next biggest.

Shreve Hall
Width: 11? 5?
Length: 16? 2?
Height: 8?

Owen Hall
Width: 11? 7?
Length: 16? 2?

You arent going to get much bigger than that. Some of the new rooms in Cary Quad are bigger, but I dont know if that part is done being remodeled yet. I would also predict that if it is done all upper classman will take those rooms.

The 11'7 x 16'2 isnt anything big, but once you put in a loft the room really opens up. Last year my roommate and I had two beds, a futon, a couch, two computers, huge stereo system, microwave, etc... all crammed into the room. Sure it was tight but we managed.

Get used to it cause its dorm life.

Thanks for the link, I'll do a more in-depth research this weekend when I have more time. But I would also like personal opinions - so far, I think I've narrowed my choices down to Shreve and Owen's - what are the differences and why is one better than the other?

I liked Owen because of location. I dislike shreve because its the Wellness dorm and they serve IMHO nasty, healthy food.

Cary's Food is the best and its only like a minute walk from the guys side of Owen hall.

hey i pay $32/month for my Purdue internet access. of course it is much nicer than the rate limited, bandwidth throttled ethernet connection the dorms have

They just started the bandwidth throttling this past semester and it has killed some users. After about 500mb download you are throttled to a slower connection. If you end up downloading a lot of stuff you are eventually throttled to a 56k connection. However, I do agree with the throttling because too many people were taking advantage of the connection and running ftp's and other servers and were killing the connections for the rest of us. Serves them right.

One more question for today: what meal plan seems to fit most people (I'm gonna major in EE so I'm guessing engineer majors have less time to eat)?

Why would engineering majors have less time to eat than anyone else?

It all depends on what you schedule looks like and how many credit hours you have. I for one am not an engineering major, but I have a rough schedule. I am taking 21 credit hours and have several engineering courses.

I say go with the 15 because that is what I went with. I know that ten meals a week is too little and that 20 is too much. I dont eat breakfast or even three times a day so 20 would be overkill for me. Plus with the 15 meal plan you get $175 dining dollars (to be used at the shop-like deals around campus). The 15 meal plan gives you the most dining dollars to be used out of the three options.

BTW my one roommate is a EE and the other is ME and they both opted for the 15 meal plan when we lived in the dorms.

How do you get that connection versus resnet?

I live off campus in an apartment and Verizon and Purdue have worked out a deal for DSL service at discounted rates. I pay $32.75/month for 1500KBps down and 384KBps up.

What kind of server are you looking to run?

You can run a server, but depending on what it is it may not be a good idea. (I speak from experience) They have implemented bandwidth throttling and it kills your connection speed. Let me see if I can find more details on the limits.

So does it restart after one day?

Like if I downloaded a gig of stuff, it would run at 56k.. but like the next day, would that counter start over?

I believe it has a 24 hour stall, but I am not sure on that. Plus if you downloaded a gig I would say you would be on PUCC's watch list. And believe me PUCC is d@mn good at what they do. Ive been in contact with them a few times and I now work for them.
