hello all!

lurker with some basic questions.

(and upfront, i understand that I could probably make this a dyi project, but with work and family, think that in the long run a wiser choice to buy it done)

so here goes:

Power Supply ( NZXT 850W Power Supply [Quad SLI Ready] )
not going quad yet.. who knows.. like to plan for the worse)

Processor ( Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6600 (2x 2.4GHz/4MB L2 Cache/1066FSB) )

Processor Cooling ( Liquid CPU Cooling Fan System Kit --- [for INTEL CPU] )

Motherboard ( Asus Striker Extreme nForce® 680i SLI Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, IEEE-1394 Dual PCI-E MB )

(still on the fence.. more expensive then the Asus P5N32-E SLI nForce® 680i SLI Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, IEEE-1394 Dual PCI-E MB)

Memory ( 1024MB [512MB X2] DDR2-800 PC6400 Memory Module Corsair-Value or Major Brand ) going to purchase 2g later on of better memory at a better price)

Video Card ( [==New !!!==] NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX 768MB w/DVI + TV Out Video )

do i really need 756. naw .. but might as well do it..

Hard Drive ( Gaming HARD DRIVES [Serial ATA-150, 10,000 RPM] WD Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 16M Cache Hard Drive )

may drop to a 75gb hdd.. but havent decided which one yet and have a 300 gb ata hdd sitting around and present system a 160 gb hdd sata

CD/DVD Drive ( 16x DVD-ROM Drive Black )

have one on present system which i will add for a second cd drive

Sound Card ( 3D Premium Surround Sound Onboard )

think with they system, onboard should be good enough

Speaker System have 5.1 speakers atm

Network Card ( Onboard LAN Network (Gb or 10/100) )

Meter Display ( Thermal Temperature LCD Display Black )

ok.. i know i dont really need this.. and looked at the remote one.. ok.. now i need a remote for my computer?? wow..

Operation System ( Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium + [Free 60-Day !!!] Microsoft Office 2007(Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access ....) )

ok.. this is where i am totally stuck on.. do i need vista? i like to use my comp for gaming (is there any other real use?? (lol).. do i get vista basic? do i really want ultimate? this is one of the things i cant get a good feel for. i have been reading the forums all over the place.. and some places state xp can run dx10.. but not really.. (so i am unsure)

Case Round Cable ( Rounded Cables for Floppy/HDD/CD/DVD/CD-RW/DVD-RW Drives )
Case Round Cable ( Professional wiring for all cables inside the system tower )

might as well get it to look neater inside

2300 or so.. i havent had the funds before to get a top of line system until recently..(as a matter of fact, she seems to think granite counter tops would be better then another computer.. ) so like i have always stated in the past.. you guys herein know what is what and dont give bs reviews and ideas. Your comments, good and bad are all (more of less) unbiased. I know i will hear, dyi or similar comments. I do apprecaite all the help and know if anyone who knows their sh#t, will be on these forums.

thanks in advance, and with many thanks, /bow

thanks for the responses. the power supply you listed, has a pretty bad rating or review.. but i will look at another one..
xp pro.. ya xp pro is pretty stable but i suspect vista will be sooner or later.. (hope sooner). as to 10% drop in preformace, going from 256 mc 6800 vanilla to a 8600 756.. should be a big jump in itself..

any other thought.. ?/

thanks..

going with:

600 Watts Power Supplies (Enermax Noisetaker EG701AX-VE(W) SFMA 24P

seems quite. and as far as i can tell can handle the loads put on it.. (not sure if it could accept 2 gtx's)

Hi,

Generally speaking, it looks like you have a good setup in mind. Here are a few comments / suggestions (sorry if some of them are out of order)

Motherboard: The Striker is expensive, and in many people's opinions, not worth the extra cost. If you must have Asus, then the P5N32 680i is a worthwhile option, although the most popular (and best IMHO) 680i board is from eVGA. The latest A1 release is an outstanding performer with rock solid stability. Plus, with eVGA you get great support and a lifetime warranty that even supports your overclocking attempts. I bought an eVGA 680i A1 over an ASUS board and have no regrets.

RAM: Given the other components you plan to purchase, such as the CPU and the video card, having only 1 Gig of RAM will drag you down and become a bottleneck. Best to get 2 Gigs now as it will be a much better match for an E6600 and an 8800 GTX card. Look here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231098 for a very decent DDR-2 set for $99. Can't go wrong.

PSU: For the best PSU reviews and advice, consult www.jonnyguru.com.

Videocard: For a 24 inch display, a GTX will come in quite handy. Good pick!

Vista: If you go Vista, then you'll probably want Home Premium, unless you have a need to join a network Domain, in which case you'll need Vista Business. However, Vista Business omits Media Center, so if you need both Domain access and Media Center, you'll have to pony up for Ultimate. Vista Home Premium will serve you well otherwise. There is alot of FUD about switching to Vista now. Some of it is warranted, some of it isn't. Basically what it boils down to is that the OS is so new, almost every different computer will have a different experience running it. I say go for it, but have a backup copy of XP handy in case you decide you don't like it.

Hard Disks: I'm in the camp that says Raptors are overpriced and also not worth the disk-space sacrifice for the speed gain. If it's between a Raptor vs. 2 Gigs of RAM now, then definetely get the 2-Gigs. It'll make a much bigger difference in the long run.

I think that's it,

Best of luck with your build. Enjoy :)

Mark.

thanks for the reply yip!
ya, i did drop the striker.. considering its little brother.. but looking at 680i.. and will consider that evga big time.
ram, what i picked was to get it out the door.. i have 2gbs of some mem, (1gb sticks x 2) in present comp and i can buy better mem somewhere else).(and with some decent timing) (another thing i need to relearn./understand)(hehe)
psu.. ya i have just found jonnyguru.. i dont plan on going with 2 gtxs atm.. and who knows.. so i am reviewing the power.. (man i am learning more and more each time) liking the Enermax Noisetaker EG701AX-VE or a Thermaltake ToughPower 750W
hdd.. ya.. i can see that.. its not a matter of money .. i play more often then not online games.. but will consider your advice.. (and that drive is more for os and one or 2 games..

once again, thank you for your input!!
