Well, even though I may be new to handguns *not new to rifles by any means* my dad isnt new to handguns. And trust me, purchasing a Redhawk will NOT put my wife off from shooting. She likes the Redhawk more than any other gun.

She is more excited about using it more than I am

Yea, the price of that gun is $888...but that isnt the site I will be getting it from. There are a few gun shops around here with it so I will be looking there as well.

The .50 AE round that IMI chambers in their Desert Eagle is a complete laughingstock when compared to a real mans .50 caliber handgun - the .500 S&W.

WTF does your dad have to do with it?

Lots of peoples' grandparents fought in WW2, doesn't mean that we all know how to field-strip a Browning 50 cal.

Hey, if you can afford the ammo, and if shooting to you is about the bruise on your hand and the ringing in your ears, have at it. In fact, why stop there? If you actually want to learn how to hit a target, or if you want to carry anywhere...I'd recommend at least TRYING a smaller gun first.

It simply means that he will tell me all I need to know. I know a good bit anyway....But to begin with, if you are just going to be an ass in this thread, then stay out of it.

Bruise the hand ? I think not. Maybe you might be a wuss.....but there sure as hell isnt one here.

Have you ever shot a .44 magnum handgun before? I'd recommend renting one before you actually go out and buy on personally.

I have this one myself. It does make a very loud boom and it kicks a bit.

Wow man, that is sweet. Do you hunt with it ?

I haven't with the 454. I have taken the 44 out this year deer hunting, shot at a coyote with it, about 50 yards. Missed the coyote, so I haven't taken it out since. I need to do some more practice before I feel comfortable enough to get a lethal shot off. Until then I'm sticking to the .270. I did end up getting the coyote with the .270 later that evening.

The Israeli made Desert Eagles aren't bad guns. Sure they're not practical, but they are a spectacle, and they are fun to shoot. Not to mention they're rock solid reliable, plus the .50 AE isn't exactly a ballistic disappointment.

The .500 S&W is a beast though. Especially the little 4" bear survival model. :D

Yes, and have you shot a .44? I'm still not at 100% with my .45 yet after years of pistol shooting. Sure I can shoot it better then most, but I'm still a lot better with my other handguns.

I have the .500 S&W for hunting and hunting only. If you would shoot this for fun you will go broke fast! First question is why would you want it and how much do you want to shoot it. For me I use it to deer hunt because I love bow hunting but dad still gun hunts. I have a 30-06 and it just was to easy for me so I was losing intrest but wanted to hunt with my father...... thus the .500 S&W. Now gun hunting is fun again for me and I still get two times a year to put meat on the table. Like I said though it is not cheap. Now that my gun is sighted in I only have to take 4 shots a year..... 3 in paper and one in game.

My best friend has a 629 that I have shot quite a bit, and as much as I like guns, that one isn't fun to shoot more than a few rounds at a time, especially if I was paying for the ammo. ;) The only way I would consider purchasing a .44 magnum for myself is if I wanted a handgun strictly for hunting. It is not a plinker by any means, nor is it a legitimate carry weapon. Buying one as your first handgun is just foolish, IMO. You should look at the GP100 if you are set on a Ruger revolver - it would be much more reasonable.

Well, I can tell you all now, the .44 Mag will be used for hunting since it has plenty of stopping power apparently. Of course the ONLY think I ever used to hunt is deer....which I plan on getting back into.

Just cannot live without my deer meat. :)

Going to be going with a hand gun because I have some back problems and what not and probably cannot carry rifles for an extended period of time. :(

i think you have to have been involuntarily placed in a mental hospital for that to affect your ability to purchase a gun, but I am not 100% sure on that.

although, if you have those kinds of problems, you should probably not purchase a handgun

That is sound advice. Thanks pontifex.

Anyone else have an opinion ?

..carried a Ruger RedHawk for many years in the woods. Solid, over built revolver that never fails. My fav.hand load was a 220 grain Speer metalic silhouette .44 magnum with Hogden 110 flattened spherical powder. Never did recover any rounds that took down wild boar or deer. They went thru and thru. My grips are Herret Shooting Star (wood) with custom rear sight. It also does well with .240 grain wad cutters using Unique gun powder.

:shrug;

If the purpose of owning a handgun to you is to prove that you're not a wuss, then I guess you did make a good choice. And if it's to work out your anger issues, maybe it's also a good choice.

I just went with the original assumption that you wanted a CC and target shooting weapon.

At any rate, hope you enjoy it.
