Purchased my first town home! looking for upgrade ideas!

Hey all! I just purchased my first town home and am looking for some upgrade ideas! I plan to keep the wood laminate floor since it's a bit newer, and the previous owner seemed to want to paint every room a different color so upgrades that match with the floor would be great! Also, I have not purchased any furniture yet, as I would wait to see what type of color scheme would look good after I re-paint!

I got it cheaper than I budgeted for so I have about an extra 6k to play around with updates...here are pictures of the main rooms I want to upgrade! (Kitchen is probably a priority!)

Any ideas/tips are appreciated for color of paint + type/color of furniture! Also, if you have an idea of something that would look good, i would appreciate a sample picture if you can find one!

Thanks!

Light tan is a nice color for the rooms. Kilz seems to be a good primer for all that color!
Also, (and this may go over-budget) real wood floors.

^ As much as I would love real wood floors, it seems like it wouldn't be the smartest upgrade as the laminate floors were recently installed by the previous owner.

That works. Just try not to nick it! Lay down rugs or something.
Btw, I like the hanging cabinets over the sink, as well as the big doors in the dining room.

Paint a 'base' of brown along the walls at 6ft and then a thin band of green and the rest sky blue. It will be like standing in a grave all day.

It matches your floor as well. My old house was done that way and it was gorgeous! This time around I did beige and it works just as well just too much brown'ish tones. The gray breaks it up.

I'd suggest white shaker cabinets as well...makes your kitchen look a tad bigger.

Id go ahead an repaint. That should be pretty easy and cheap overall. Other than that i'd just set the money aside till you move in and really can see what you need to update/redo. Least when i moved into my house i kept finding things to change/buy that i hadnt thought of before hand.

Congrats on the purchase. I'm not really fond of the colors, though they may look nice once furniture is present. One of my favorite combinations of colors is peanut butter on 3 walls with roasted pepper on the 4th wall.

I've never been a fan of Kilz (and most painters I meet don't like it either). Zinnser bin Oil base is what I use (just vent it out GOOD while you use it, have lots of fans going).

For paint, BenMoore!!!

.

Be careful with Grey, unless you add popping colors with accents/pillows or curtains.....it will feel downright depressing.

It's great when done right though IMO.

Go lighter colors in that kitchen and strip the cabinets and get new hardware if you want to be cost effective.

If you want to go granite but dont want to spend much in there get some of the lighter commercial stones that sell for less than half price of say Black Galaxy.

Blue Bahia is pricy but really pops and looks good in matching bathrooms.

Where do you live OP?

town home meaning it shares walls with other units? See if you can beef up insulation between the unit, like blown insulation.

definitely new cabinets and kitchen appliance.

i saved some money by buying store credits and gift cards from craigslist. agree to meet at home depot, for example, and grab all that i need. then let the seller pay via cards. then i hand over the cash. saved around 30%

insulating the outer walls will have more effect for energy savings. you can probably assume the adjacent units will be climate controlled. if you are talking about for noise reduction, maybe that will work. a lot probably depends on the actual construction.

i say repaint for sure. kitchen looks dated, id consider redoing the cabinets (paint? i dunno) and new appliances

Congrats!

Paint is really subjective. If anything you may want to buy the furniture you like and then base the paint color of your walls off of that. In regards to upgrades, replace those interior doors and light fixtures. And save up to gut that kitchen.

I am more talking about noise insulation. won't help on the people stomping on the floor, but it should muffle loud tv.

This is only the second house I have seen with the Pepto-bismal pink.

First one was the one I bought in 2003.

Screw kilz. Get paint from Lowes/HD (the one with the built in primer). That stuff has gotten a lot better recently.

FWIW, this is coming from the son of a house painter.

Wow, those colors are horrible. The only one that might be passable is the dining area.

I like the gray suggestion with the white base molding. That would look good.

Definitely get rid of the cabinets. I have a feeling simple white cabinets would look very good if you go with the grey color scheme.

If you want to get a little fancy crown molding around the top of the wall will also add a lot.

This is a little ridiculous - but you can see what it adds.

Do something with the paint. As far as going beyond cosmetics, that kitchen needs help STAT! A serious remod is in order.

Kitchen cabinets
There are no pictures of the bath area(s)

Those two provide the biggest bang for the buck.

What does the back yard look like.

Keep half your savings around for emergencies.
