Anyone know a good way to teach a new puppy to go outside and do his business? I am doing the "goes outside give him a treat" method. Any other good methods?

Reward is always the best method until your dog gets too fat :p

Make sure to exercise him plenty too :D

You have to keep a close eye on him/her. Any time he/she starts sniffing or doing the "I really gotta go" walk, take him/her outside. Also shortly after meals. If you find a present on the floor afterwards it's too late for scolding to be of any use.

That's about it, I think.

What is exceptable punishment for going inside?

I just said it. :p

Of just shove its nose in it and then bring it and the puppy out and show it being outside.

Nothing works like showing who the master is though. :D

From what I've read and discovered, that doesn't work very well. All it does is encourage the puppy to hide his poop better next time.

You have to catch them in the act.

So this way you don't step in it then. :D

Don't believe everything you read man, try it 1st. :p

As I said, "read and discovered". Discovered meaning the poop went from being on the middle of the floor to behind the couch.

If the dog gets enough time outside (especially after meals) it will be very little problem anyway. If you can't offer it that or at least a puppy pad, then dog ownership may not be for you.

Probly cause you didn't beat it enough. :p

Just place happypuppy's head on it and there you go. :D

Get a clicker. I'm not sure where to get them at, but they are these little plastic boxes that you can press that makes a "click" sound, similar to that of a metal pop cap when you press it down. Then, everytime the puppy does something "good", click it a couple times and give it a treat. He'll learn to associate good things with the click so in time you can drop the treats and just use the clicker.

the best thing to do is take it out a lot, and then praise it and/or give it rewards when it does its business outside. also, dont punish it if it goes potty inside, unless you catch it in the act.

positive reinforcement is the best teaching tool.

That is for wimps.

Make it fear you so you can just look at it and it runs away and hides.

Now if only it works on the puppy in this forum. :D

Crate training is the best method, or so it seems to me.

Get a dog cage and keep him in there. Take him out every hour or so to do his thing. A dog won't do business in their bed unless forced to. After a few days he'll get the idea that he should do business outside.
