Of course you'd be at fault if you had chased him down to do it.

So next time, be "startled" and smack him in the face with the magazine right when he does it.

Just tell the beat cop...oh wait, there aren't any
Just tell the store proprietor...oh wait, they don't care
Just wait for the nearest adult to the kid to correct him...oh wait, they don't wanna get involved.

Yup, just back hand the punk and take yer lumps for abusing the poor misguided 12 year old.

This reminds me of that news story where some punk teen tossed a rock at someones car on the interstate.. the guy stopped his car and got out and started to chase the kid. The kid turned to run and got killed by a car coming the other direction.

Owned.

I'll see if I can dig it up at some point. There was a post on here about it several months ago. There were actually people arguing that the guy who got out of the car should be held responsible for the kids death.

Wooo, the guy chasing him could be liable for that.

Punch him in the nose and blame it on your involuntary cat like reflex.

Reminds me of when I was younger and hanging out with my friend where we rode up to the toy shop a few miles away. My buddy and I were locking up our bikes, when there were some suspicious youths from ages 10 to 13 "admiring" the bikes. Since they looked suspicious, I stood in the toy store front area where I could watch the bikes from inside the store.

Of course as soon as they thought the coast was clear, they try to clip the chains and take off with one of the bikes. I ran outside and the kid with the bike panicked and tried to ride straight across the street. He ended up getting hit by a car, then running off with a slight limp, dumping the bike on the grass across the street. His friends all booked as well. The bike had a small dent in the pedal from where the car hit it (hit and run). Never saw the punks again.

Well, you could lecture them for their actions hoping they learn their lesson, but odds are it will not have any effect. The law prevents you from taking any further action so it is best that you just let it go. What happened to you would piss off anyone, but the less you let it to continue to bother you the better off you will be. Life goes on and unless those punk kids learn their lesson in the future then they probably will not have much of a future when they grow up. Take some satisfaction in that.

Everyone, myself included, did stupid stuff as a kid, but kids these days are taking things to a whole new level. It's getting out of hand.

@MagnusTheBrewer: Unfortunately, those parents that are nowhere to be found and could probably care less what their kid is doing would be the first ones to take your ass to court for child abuse.

I think you'd have a decent case for placing him under citizen's arrest for battery. Knock him down, sit on him, call the cops and wait. Chances are he'll just get a talking to, but I bet he won't forget it.

When we were kids the adults were saying the exact same things about us so... *shrug*

Touche. However I feel like kids these days really are worse, much worse, than we were when we were kids.

Which is why I said take yer lumps for abusing the poor misguided kid. Maybe I've just been lucky but, I've found that when you take action, the adults around you seem relieved. I know litigation has reached absurd levels in our country but, I refuse to live my life based on some accountants view of risk management.

If that is truly the case across the country, then the parents are to blame. Not the kids so much. That plus maybe this country's continuous disregard for our need for higher quality education.

I liked the one about the kid throwing eggs at cars and one guy chases him down and shoots him.

moral of the story: don't bring an egg to a gunfight.

The thing is, you would need to get the punch in immediately. That way when it goes to court, on video it looks like a reflex action.

Are you older than 12? If so, then yes, you would be the one at fault.

Obviously I didn't punch a 12 year old, but what would be the appropriate response to a kid that seems out of control in a public area with no guardian present?

Realize the kid is 12 and let it go?

I mean, if his parents were around you could obviously tell them - though in many cases if the kid is that big of an asshole chances are his parents are, too.

No. Children need to be put in their place when they are incorrect. It's your child so you dont have the right to do so but the store manager can remove anyone at their discression.

I LOVE the comment about telling the manager you saw him taking merch. That would be hilarious to watch

How exactly does one put them in their place in this situation? Lying to the manager and having the kid get searched for stolen items only to find nothing is not going to do it. Obviously it is a good thing that kids do not get away with this stuff, but don't fool yourself. There is nothing you can do about it which will achieve more than giving you a false sense of satisfaction. If the parents do not care then nothing will change regardless of what you do in situations like these.

Maybe that's part of the problem. We need to stop thinking like helpless turds flopping on the ground. I'm not saying I have the answer, I'm not saying that lying to the manager is a good solution.
