Punishing my 6 yr old boy

So
Friday nights first game of the year, he's playing net for a shift and figured out that if he punches players in the head through the netting as they skate behind the net, he can knock them off their pins.
I'm so proud:eek:
The ref who happened to be a coach on our team told me after the game and I had already sent him for candy at the concession for until then was a good game for him.
I was not pleased that the ref did tell him 3X not to do that.
Initiation hockey is such they don't give out penalties or even bother to keep score or rankings as this is almost purely learning.

My Justice tonight, hockey practice and the scene of the crime is figuring out how to crush his behavior but not crush him?

You punch him through the net now, and see how he likes it? Just kidding.

Ask him why he didn't respect the ref/coach enough to follow their directions, and explain that such a person is to be obeyed when on the ice, whether in practice or while playing the game. I would recommend not getting into the whole idea of punishment/rewards as motivation for his actions, that will lose a lot of effect when he gets older.

Why can't you just give him a time out if he does it? Either yank him off the ice or don't even allow him to go(assuming he actually enjoys it).

Teach him early what the penalty box is.

second that. Or you could buy some netting and carry it around to randomly punch him in the head. Eventually he would ask you to stop at which time you would explain how uncool it is to punch people when the referee is looking.

Isn't playing hockey punishment enough :)

Seriously, I don't think that's worthy of a punishment. Just explain to him what he's doing wrong. Now if he keeps doing the same thing, then a punishment is in order.

or just tell him to play a real sport :)

I am a coach on the team and secondly something from me, has a whole lot more impact than most other people, so far at his age.

I'm thinking I'm going to reenact the situation once we get on the ice, ask him the hard questions as to why? and where did the respect go? and then sit his butt in the box for 6min , as that is the usual amount for a timeout of somebody of his age.
Finally dish out the consequences that if he does it again he's going to miss a whole game.
He truley does love hockey, but he's always been the type to push boundaries.

that's like parents assuming that school teachers should teach kids right/wrong without the parent being responsible for anything.

Watch 'Running Scared' and I'm sure that'll give you a good idea for an appropriate Hockey punishment.

Time outs are very effective, so use that to your advantage. Beating him may not solve much of a problem.

Are you saying that you completely understand parenting? Write a book about it, I'm sure everyone would love to know.

the hell it is... a sports coach is not a school teacher and can punish kids for doing wrong. when was the last time a English teacher made you run 2 laps for talking in class?

This sounds like a very reasonable solution.

LOL
I just told the story to a guy at work and he shared a story of his childhood when he was 8/9

His dad told him to get some gasoline for the lawnmower so he filled up the gas can with water first to see if it would be too heavey to carry on his bike when filled.
His dad kicked him in the nuts!
He said he never did that again 'nosh1t'
I asked him if he felt it was appropriate how his dad handled the situation and he didn't think so, so much :D

one year my football coach was my math teacher... i ran many laps and did countless up-downs) based on my behavior in his class.
