Went on a cruise back in October and in the on ship gym they had a punching bag, on sea days (7 day long cruise) I spent some time in the gym in the mornings (partially for that ego boosting pump for after I went out to the deck to hang by the pools), decided to give it a try and actually rather enjoyed it after I figured out what I was doing (gloves on the wrist, shitty yet not so painful technique, etc)

I was wondering if hitting a punching bag is a good work out? Cardio/Conditioning wise. If so, are there any free resources or relativley inexpensive to get me started on a proper routine? I remember reading in Mens Health that punching bags are pretty good but I wasn't sure how reliable that was and if it is where to go about getting a bag, gloves, etc.

FYI: I already do normal cardio at least four days a week on top of my four day weight lifting set up, this is just something to do when I'm at home and don't feel like going running/biking.

I think that maybe before you buy the bag and gloves, you should try out boxing at a local boxing or MMA gym. Doing that will teach you the form of striking, how to wrap your wrists, how not to hurt yourself, etc. I did boxing workouts before I did Muay Thai and it just practiced poor form. Like everything else, form is extremely important in boxing. From there, you can ask the guys who actually know something where you can buy gloves and bags locally.

Yeah I'd recommend this as well. You can't really teach yourself proper form. And if you try it on your own you're likely to hurt your wrists or not properly wrap your hands and mess them up as well.
