Pumpkin carving ideas

We are having a Halloween party in a few weeks and I want to do some creative pumpkins for it. I know for sure I am going to do a Wheel of Time themed one as a surprise for my wife, but I need something else as well. I did the Mortal Kombat symbol last year as well as Darth Vader, both of which turned out really well.

I haven't tried out the technique of removing only the top layer to let some light shine through the pumpkin flesh itself, but I plan on giving that a whirl. I was thinking about taking pictures of my kids and using Photoshop to filter them down to 2 or 3 layers of color, then carve those. The only problem is that I would need to do 3 of them and that would take forever (although it would be really neat).

Any of you have any interesting subject ideas? I don't really want to do anything movie or TV show related.

If I can find the pictures of last years pumpkins I will post them, and if any of you are seasoned pumpkin carvers then advice is always appreciated.

Negative. This is going to be a family oriented party with little kids. I don't want that to necessarily mean boring (Dora, Mickey, etc.) but no vomiting pumpkins either. I want something epic to give me a real challenge and wow everyone over.

One of my ideas is to take some classic painting and carve it.

the scream.

or maybe this...

We used to have themes for the pumpkins at our house. We did Penn State themes one year, Star Wars the next, and Invader Zim after that. After Gir ended up on my car, I decided I was through with the tradition.

people have had mixed success with that at our pumpkin carving parties over the years.

Someone did this a couple years ago, and I thought it turned out pretty good:

I did my Happy Halloween pumpkin that year to put out front and let people know where the party was. A real bitch to carve.
