if you don't pull it out even all the way, the leftover contacts that are left after you only cleanly pull out half the contacts (even for a split second) will in all likelihood short.

My friend installed a pci modem with his computer running. "After its installed, start it up." "Its installed and its been running." "You didn't turn it off?" "No, you never said to"

I guess it's like PS/2 mice and keyboards. There's no standardized hot swap behavior (outside of the aforementioned high-end server boards), so your mileage will vary. Every time I've pulled a PCI card out of a running system it's resulted in a hard freeze but no damage.

there are a few server types with really dim power lights. it results in us data center guys doing a lot of accidental hot swapping. :)

want to know what is *not* fun? accidently pulling the only CPU out of a machine that's running. it makes the most high-pitched beep imaginable. heh.

we've never had a server or piece of hardware break because of hotplugging, but it's still not the greatest thing in the world to do.

Once, I was installing new RAM in my aunt's HP desktop (damn those things are silent, esp. teh PIII 900 MHz) and it was on, and I didn't know it, and I plugged in a memory module, and I was like SH*T! But, to my surprise, it did nothing bad! Just unplugged the POS computer, put in the RAM stick, and booted right up!

Interesting.
