Pulled over for obstruction of view?

Hi all,

Last night, driving on a local highway here (dead highway, only car on the road), I got pulled over by a cop who was passing me at one point, for about 10 minutes, before he just nailed me.

Needless to say, he asked me all these questions: where you going, do you have drugs or alcohol in your car, what are those (points to earplugs in glove compartment). Then he says "I stopped you for two reasons: the first is because you have something hanging from your mirror, which is obstruction of view." He then asked if I had any points on my license, I said no. He went back to his car, never told me the second reason, and then came back, handed me my stuff, and left.

I take it you didn't get a ticket? Probably just a drunk check. Used to happen to me every time I drove through a certain town late at night. Really annoying.

I've always wondered if I can get in trouble for having my radar detector mounted OVER my rearview mirror as "obstruction of view"....

in some states you can get in trouble for having a radar detector, and its a bigger fine than obstruction of view.

Virginia, DC and some big western state (Oregon?). Everyone who owns an RD knows this. My RD has already saved me many times its value in speeding tickets. I really could care less, since I almost never drive through those states anyway.

Defintately a drunk check. An state trooper friend of mine does it all the time. He just needed anything to give him a reason to stop you. My friend says that by the time he gets to your car he can find some reason (seatbelt, license plate, tinted windows, etc.)

It's enough of an excuse to pull you over, but I doubt they'd ever give you a ticket.

Lets face it, they've got enough of an excuse to pull anyone over if they want to.

I love those. I had a cop follow me for 10 miles once because he thought I was sure that I was going to wreck into something at the speed I was going. Unfortunately for him, I had to vary my speed so much, with it being such a twisty road, that there was no way he could get an indisputable pacing. When the twisties ended, he stopped me, laughed at my story and sent me on my way lol.

Not Oregon, they're legal here, it's California.

Sounds like he was doing a drunk check. Something like that happened to me one time. It was a thursday night, four lane freeway. I was driving my friend's car because he had a beer (he was 18) and we were driving along at 55 in a 55. And suddenly I see a pair of headlights right on my ass. I was like "WTF? Just go around!". There was nobody on the road, I could've driven safely on the wrong side of the freeway there was so little traffic that night. Then I see the red and blue lights, so I pull over and wait for them to ask "Do you know what we pulled you over for?" so I can honestly reply "No.". They take my license and registration, wait a bit, and hand it back saying my friend's license plate light was out.

Not Oregon, they're legal here, it's California.

It's not California. It's only illegal to have a radar jammer or laser jammer here.
