Hey guys.

I pulled a muscle in my back about a year and a half ago pretty badly at work. I managed to pull the same muscle today, and then worse getting out of a car. Any suggestions as to how I should go about speeding recovery ? I'm going to try and pick up some anti-inflamitory tablets, but if anyone has had this before and knows what I should do, it would be appreciated.

Stretch regularly. See a doctor and they will give you a whole brochure on stretches that you can do.

i pull my latissimus dorsi 2 weeks ago. it was awful. i had tons of spasms and couldn't get in and out of a car, could barely lay down.

i got muscle relaxers from my doctor, and did absolutely no exercise for 2 weeks. i also kept a steady intake of ibuprofen.

unless you have access to a sport therapist, i really don't know anyway to speed up recovery.

back injuries are scary...you are totally useless until it heals

Use a heating pad, with massager to relax it. Lots and lots of advil. Other than that, the only thing you need is time.

When someone damages their body like that, seeking help from a doctor usually isn't the best idea. They just prescribe some pain killers and that doesn't really heal any displaced tissues or bones. Then it makes it easier for the person to damage the same muscles later on in life like you just did.

I learned that from my chiropractor. Go see one, a good chiropractor will help you heal it properly and you'd be much better off. Otherwise, you'd go through the same problems periodically for the rest of your life.

try this exercise for 15 minutes, i had pulled a back muscle a few years ago pretty badly and my moms doc told me to try it and it worked well, i try to do it now once a week, but make sure you do it for the full 15 minutes

the exercise is very simple, simply lie down on your back on the floor with your but pressed up against the wall and cross your legs indian style on the wall , then grab ahold of your hands with each other and make a diamond shape above your head. thats it just lie their with your arms and hands above your head and your lie on your back almost like you are sitting on the wall. just saty their for a full 15 minutes and take deep relaxing breaths.

the point of the exercise it to give the muscles that support your spine some tempotrary relief, with your arms above your head (on the ground) all the muscles from the top of your back to the bottom get a nice respit from their usual work.

give it a try, the worst that happens is that it doesnt get any better, the best that you feel better and learned a new exercise to help your back out.

I know for mine, the use ultrasound on it and it actually helps a lot. I have a muscle in my lower back that won't relax and thats what my chiropractor uses to get it to relax.

Oh....my god. I can't believe you would actually recommend a chiropractor over a doctor. Sure, the doctor will give you painkillers to ease the pain, but he'll also tell you what you can and can't do until it heals, and if need be, will get you a surgical consult. A chiroquack will either

a.) Be lucky and help
or
b.) Worsen the damage

You'd be surprised how many people wind up in this hospital visiting specialists because of damage done by the chiroquacks.

CONFIRMED. I hate Chiros. You might as well go to a masseuse.

I'm guessing that you've neither had back problems, nor visited a chiropractor.

If my suspicions are correct, then your opinion has very little bearing and I hope that people take it with a huge grain of salt.

At any rate...

After 10+ years of working on cars for a living, my back is not healthy... I suffer(ed) from back spasms and there were days when I literally couldn't walk.
I've been to general doctors, back specialists, and orthopedic surgeons. None of them did any good for me. I ended up going to a practice that was run by chiropractors, massage therapists, and physical therapists.

I went to them regularly for about a year, and I have the opinion that those guys can be miracle workers. My back is infinitely better now. They tought me so much about how to take care of my back... Stretching, exercises, posture, etc.

You were one of the lucky ones. I've been to a chiro for a back injury suffered during high school sports, and he caused me to temporarily lose all feeling and movement to my left arm. I had to go to an orthopedist to correct the problem caused by the chiro. It took a month before I gained mobility in my arm again. From the sheer number of people that come in due to chiroquacks, I'd say you were extremely lucky.

go to doctor

Ask for a physical therapy referral or a recommendation.

report this to your work first incase there is any claim involved or missed work.

And I'll agree with others...avoid a chiro at all costs. You have a pulled muscle...not severe back problems.

What's the driver's seat position and suspension like in your car?

Back problems can be aggravated by long commutes in cars with low seats and stiff suspensions, as typically found in sports cars.

Stick-shift (manual) transmissions are also more taxing on your back than automatic transmission vehicles.

More upright and comfortable seats such as found in MiniVans and SUV are better for your back.

Good health,
