Pull-Ups: How many can you do?

Just wondering. I have to do them for my airborne training and I try to average close to 20 a day. I figure it can't hurt me (well, at least it won't hurt for a while 😉 ).

Not many folks I know add pull-ups to their work out routines so I thought maybe the ATOT clan can help.

3 sets of 20 15 10

it's not my expertise.. I'm 160lbs @ 5'9"

but, I consider myself exceptionally strong for doing diamond push-ups (for my age/weight)

100 60 40 (200 total) of diamond push-ups.. I'm talking about full slow-paced, proper ones... not the sissy ones most people do.. many people have seriously wrong form doing them

my friends are like WTF? because I'm so used to doing them, I can do more Diamond pushups than regular pushups

Diamond pushups use more of triceps and shoulder muscles than regular ones

none lol
actually maybe like one or two... three if my life depended on it

correction: i can do 3 CHIN-UPs. I can't do any pull ups hehehehe

energy bar = marketig hype

nothing but sugar, and other 'significant' resoucres they claim to help you are very little to none.

you prolly gain more strength from your psychological will of 'i ate it' than the actual bar itself

Geez!!!!! That's a lot! My son while potty training only averaged 3 Huggie pullups a day. And that was only if he drank a lot of juices!😉

I only used to be able to do like 3 of them last October... but I went to the gym like 4-5 times a week for roughly 2 months, and 2-3 times for around 2-3 more months (I didn't had time during the second semester).

I didn't manage to loose weight or got muscles to look bigger (in appearance), but my muscles got harder than they were before and I managed to do 15 pushups at 3AM the other day. I was kinda happy, that was the only "real" improvement I could see from going to the gym 🙂

60-80 full pull ups in a row.. are you serious? I've never even seen people in fantastic shape do over 30.

I was at a rock climbing gym and there was a fingertip ladder and there was a guy that used the smallest holds and went up a foot and a half with each pull (one arm a pull) I saw( he was doing them when I got there) 90 pulls up and he had to climb down with ever 3 or 4 pulls up (cause he was skipping steps) normal you could do ten holds up then ten down. and repeat.

Around 13. I lift weights, but I don't do pullups as part of my routine... maybe sometimes at the end, and by then i can only do about 8. If I want to, I can get that number up to 20 in 2 weeks. The thing u must also consider is that Strength and Stamina are different things. If I can bench press, say 100lbs 20 times, then that doesn't mean I can bench press 50lbs 40 times. So if u want to build muscle u want to do heavy weights for about 8 reps, and if u want stamina/tone up u want to do more reps.

ehm I have some problems understanding here .. (english is not my native language) are pull ups pulling yerself up onto a bar ???
or set-ups ? (confusing really confusing ..)

if pull ups are pulling up onto a bar I get like 10 or so .. I have no muscles there ...

if pull ups are push ups I can do about 150 (training those muscles .. need to from doctor .. my back is weak and I need mure tummy muscles to support my front side ribs ... (no joke 🙁
on the other hand I got a nice washboard 😀

boran,
pull-ups are hanging from a bar, palms facing forward, and pulling yourself up until chin is at bar level. this mainly works out your lats and your back.

chin ups are hanging from a bar, palms facing backward, and pulling yourself up until chin is at bar level. this is more for biceps.

generally, chin ups are easier, so you can do more reps.

push ups are done on the floor facing down, pushing yourself up. this works out chest and tri's.

sit ups are for abs, and it's pretty much self-explanatory. works the abs.

Wow, those are a lot of pull ups.
I can do 5.
😱

but for push ups, I can go
5 sets

20
20
20
20
20

that would be 100.
🙂

actually, calisthenics are a very good measure of ones health.
it tells how much one can do, in respects to his OWN height or weight.

It seems that small frame, thin folk are better at high reps on true pull-ups.

My old coach would not count a pull-up unless you were completely down* (makes a big difference), totally up (at least chin height, no looking up but rather foreward), and NO swinging. We were permitted to have someone hold their arm in front of your legs to stop you from swinging.
You know you're getting toward the end of your extended reps when your hands and feet start going numb.

*you may think you're totally down, but people watching will say you're not, and they are right. It's harder when you are totally down, then go up again.

Overhand, about 5-7 maybe. Underhand, about 10 or so.
I am 5-10, 200, 39 years old.
I think when I was in jr. high I could do 8.
