Thanks in advance, My problem is Windows lockups while running pretty much anything but games. The lockups seems to happen most when I am sliding the scroll bar up or down or a active desktop function occurs (like when you hit the Start menu and it slides to the right) It happens alot when I am online but it is pretty constant all the time espically in programs like paint. I would say in the typical hour I will get three to four lockups, but like I said games run with no problems in fact I don't ever remeber crashing a game. When it locks up I can still move the mouse around but everything else is frozen about half the time ctrl-alt-delete is the only way out or I will get a Blue screen of Death saying the system has become unstable. I have reinstalled Win98, have tried both Asus and Nvidia drivers for my video card, Have gone from a dial up connection to cable access, have reinstalled the 4in1 drivers. I don't know what to try next it is really getting old, any ideas???

The first thing i would look at is the RAM. Cheapo ram has caused me many problems in the past. The next thing I would check out is the HD. If it is failing or the cables attached are failing then you can get problems like this. After teh HD I would check out the power supply and the outlet. In my area, the power is very poor. For example, if your lights are on and the fridge turns on the light dim, then you have dirty lines which might be the problem.

I thought about memory or hard drive problems but my games run smooth no problems whatsoever, I had my old pc plugged into the same power outlet four four years and it never had any power problems. I really think it is some kind of software error or device conflict I have a copy of Win 2000 I may give up and just try installing it instead. but any other opionions are greatly appreciated

Yes I shutoff active desktop and my problems with the start menu freezing up ended, but I still have problems any time I scroll up or down with the scroll bar, when it freezes it sometimes looks like it got confused on where to place charactors (they are oddly placed on top of each other or are spaced apart) I have an old video card that I may install and use for a day or two and see if I get the same problems, but that shouldn't make sense cause like I said games run without a hitch.????

When you scroll do you use a mouse with a scroll wheel??
Does your mouse use special drivers? (Like Logitech??)

Yes I have a logitech mouse and it does have it's own drivers, no scrollwheel though, maybe I should remove the drivers and intall my old mouse or just use that mouse with the default mouse driver, You might be on to something thanks for the input I'll try and work on it when I get home from work, thanks.
