Public speaking- Dale Carnegie technique => Worth $1600 to learn?

I'll try it but not for that much. Maybe the $1600 comes with a gold watch and 2 hookers to keep you company

It's something I would consider if I had to constantly speak about subjects that don't interest me, but then again, I would probably be considering a career change.

If I'm speaking about something that I've very knowledgeable in or passionate about, it's a piece of cake. The biggest thing, aside from being able to carry on an interesting and coherent conversation, is being able to improvise when needed. If all you can do is memorize cards word for word, you're doomed to eventually slip up in a big way.

I'm shy as hell but I love public speaking. Give me a coffee and a cigarette and I'll debate the president on live TV 😀

I don't know that I'd personally pay $1600 for it, but I can tell you that about 12 years ago, my company sponsored a Dale Carnegie course and I was required to take it as part of a promotion. We met one evening a week for a few weeks.

I grumbled, moaned, and wanted no part of it at first but I grew to really enjoy it. I have no problems speaking in public now and I think it helped me tremendously. YMMV, of course.

I took the course many years ago - it was paid for by my then employer. Interesting and useful, but I wouldn't pay for it myself.

Another vote for toastmasters, which is also useful and much less expensive. As a plus, you'll meet people there who've done Dale Carnegie, so you can pick up some techniques secondhand.

I've heard some good stories from people who have gone through it - my job consists entirely of talking to strangers, whether it be one-on-one or standing on a stage in front of hundreds. I've done a little reading but have also always wanted to take a few of these "courses" to see what I could learn.
