JFC these are annoying. As if the begging and holding programs hostage wasn't enough they try to guilt trip you into donating too.

I usually switch to a different station, or listen to my phone. I have ~337 hours of music on my phone, so I can make through any pledge drive :^D

NPR is so worth the pledge drives because of how quality it is. I am a sustaining member. Not a lot, but $8 a month and I get my tote bags. Win win.

Hah, radio. It's the same thing every time I give it another chance - I flip through the entire band to find one station playing something interesting then within ten minutes there's a five to ten minute block of ads or a pledge drive, it's complete trash.

You are missing out. NPR is one of the greatest things around. So much quality programming. They have a few pledge drives a year - so take a break from it for a few days.

Or I can run Pandora through my aux input and hear exactly zero people talking every single time I'm in the car and regardless of which part of the metro or state I am in. Just now I went to the site for my local NPR and heard some decent ambient electronica, which was followed by a guy talking for a couple minutes and then an irritating song I can't skip because you know, radio. It's just a flawed format, and I know how to find music that's just as good as what they play so I'm really not seeing the appeal.

Rarely does anyone go to NPR to hear music. It's about innovative talk radio programming across a wide thematic range from comedic stuff and long format interviews and everything in between, and in-depth news and analysis.

It's food for the brain.

It's also working a hell of a lot harder than most news stations to deliver news and no-shit interviews. I love when they're like 'and now we're here with the president of some-country, what do you have to say about the corruption charges surrounding you?'

Very true, and it's only like 1 or 2 weeks (the big drives), a few times per year.

Still, it is annoying. They do drive me nuts. I get it--but they still annoy me, heh.

You financed a tote bag @ $8/month? This better be one hell of a tote bag!

What is really annoying is that these pledge drives have become so necessary to their financial survival. Looking at Washington these days, we can only expect more cuts to their funding. It will be increasingly important for listeners who can afford it to step up and support them.

A warning: the pledge drives might become even more annoying after you have already given. :)

:innocent: I have plenty of WNYC tote bags. I always choose the tote bag level of pledging to my NPR station each year for the last 5 years. I'm secretly hoping one day when I'm toting my tote some NPR groupie chick will see me and say hello, and we'll fall madly in love.

I sure feel sorry for you. Being forced against your will to listen to anything is just hell. If only there was a dial that you could turn to just make it all go away. A button would be even better. But that's a pipe dream.

You sure do live in a hellish world. Best of luck to you.
