Public access to a Win2k folder

I've got a Win2k server and want a folder to be accessible for uses wether they are logged in or not. Is there a way to do this? The client machines are all Win98 if that matters.

I'm Win2k ignorant.

right click on the folder you want to share -- goto "sharing" tab -- make a new share with any type of access you want to give the outsude users ( I mean read or full control).

Incase your DRIVE has NTFS file system. I think u need to goto "SECURITY" tab and give control to user "EVERYONE" or "Authenticated users" (to whoever u want) to them.

If you want unauthenticated access, then use group "Everyone," as scorp said.

KIM the security implication of using that particular group: if someone can see traffic on the "wire," then they can see that folder.
At the least, don't give them "Full Control." Give the group "Change" at the very most.

I gave "Everyone" access to a folder but I still get prompted for a user name. I'm not sure if it's the problem or not, but I need users to be able to access the folder wether they have an account or not.

I'm access the server by ip address - \\10.153.4.21\c\program files\winsnap

Any ideas what I'm missing?

I don't think it is possible without severly comprimising the security of the entire 2000 box. There is a way, but it is running 2000 as a FTP server and just put that file on it. Of course that means IIS and that also means BIG security risk. No matter what firewall you are running IIS is not secure.

Just enable Guest access to the file and enable the Guest account and give out that user name "Guest" and the password, not very secure but better then other options I think.

To do it right the users can be named explicitly, but I believe they will need an account.
