is there any software out there that is built for turning a windows box into a public access computer?

what i'm looking for specifically is something that lets me install the OS, set it up with whatever settings I want and then once you use this program it will save all new info to RAM or temp memory that gets erased on reboot/logout

anything like this?

DeepFreeze and Windows SteadyState come to mind. SteadyState is for WinXP and is a freebie download from Microsoft. I suppose a virtual machine could also be a viable option.

Check out Deep Freeze, not free but I had a client that loved it. He managed a large number of public PC's, this product allows you to set a permanent configuration, so at the end of the day he could just reset the PC's back to the original state no matter what went on throughout a full day of use.

I haven't got to mess with it a whole lot due to time constraints, but SteadyState seems to be a pain to setup.
