Does anyone know if this version can read files from the Pro/DESKTOP program?
Pro/Desktop is the little brother, also free for non-commercial, and easy to use...but can't make pretty renderings.
The real Engineer can read desktop file and vice/versa. I'm just wondering how it will work with this student version.
The fact that it says it can't read regular engineer files makes me wonder.

Thanks!
My wife was just lamenting to me how specialized her field is (semiconductor mask design) and how she misses keeping up with mechanical drawing packages.
Now she can get her feet wet with ProE!

Pro/E Sucks!
I use 200i2 and it is an awful piece of software. For those of you who ordered the CD, I hope you have a powerful enough PC. I have a Dell 620/Dual Xeon's at work - and it crawls when I open relatively small assemblies. Forget about using it with Windchill.

<< let me just add that Solidworks is so much easier to use than Pro/Engineer. Also, you can convert between the two (and others) using an IGES translation (doesn't work 100% all the time though). >>

At a previous company I worked for, the IGES file format was referred to as the IGUESS format. 🙂

Pro/E may not be as good as others out there, but it still is a standard of sorts for mechanical engineering. You need a fast computer, but we found out that a high-end OpenGL video card was the most important component. [Karl Malden voice] Don't do shaded renderings without it. [/Karl Malden voice]

This is a killer deal. Thanks, pbrain.

Weird, I'm running it on a crappy P2 450 and it's all right. 512 MB RAM, some 1998 video card.

SolidWorks is much easy to learn and use - it is way to go for small assemblies.
For large assemblies you have to go with Pro/E.

About interface:
SolidWorks has very simple Windows interface, easy to learn if you know windows.
Pro/E came from Unix, took all dropdown menus from old AutoCad, but with all options it is very powerfull program.
I know that majority of companies going with Pro/E now, but simplicity and low price of SolidWorks may take over the market.
In any case AutoCad must die!

I received my copy today. It came with two disks, labeled: Pro/Engineer 2001 Student Edition, and CADTRAIN.

Wow, I can't believe it's the student edition! I know people who paid $400 for the 2001 student edition and Pro-Mechanica 2001 bundle at www.journeyed.com. What a deal this is!

What if you don't have access to a fax machine? My school is out for 2 weeks for Easter break, can someone help me out?

Just to let you all know......This is just a student version. You CANNOT use the models you create in this version with any other version (read the fine print). I have a copy that was given out for attending a 200i2 seminar. The users license states this fact.

But never the less it's still a great design learning tool.

Good luck to all!

Yes, this is true, but it WILL work with Pro-Mechanica 2001 Student Edition. Does anyone know how Pro-Mechanica compares to other widely used FEA packages?

What is the size of your model? I have Dell 620 too and we have very large size models. I never run into any problem. Actually Dell 620 is way too powerful if you only consider of using Pro/E. Yes CAD software need powerful computer and good video card. But it is not that critical, especially when you talking about today's computer.

I ordered the software. After installed it, it won't start. Setup created an entry to start a batch file. I even could not locate the right exe file. Please help.

I'm not sure if I did a default installation or what, but the link in my Start menu points to this file and it works fine.

"C:\Program Files\proe2001\bin\proe2001-stu.bat"

Pro/E is wierd that way, they do use batch files so what you have is normal.

Do you meet the system requirements? One thing you might have missed is that a network card is required.

<< Hey Pipboy don't you guys at Mattel use those 3D prototyping machines that build a model from a CAD file? I want one of those!!! >>

Pretty much every large company uses those.... rapid prototyping tooling is good stuff!
