We just started Psychology a few days ago (highschool) and our first assignemt is to write a page and a half on why 77% of all college freshmen psychology majors are females. Any ideas or tips that could get me started?

I guess I would start with the school of thought that women are better listeners, and are more apt to expressing their minds, whereas men tend more to bottle things up inside. I'm talking outta my ass here, but if I had the assignment that's what I'd be doing.

A lot of women think that by taking the class, they will immediately become smarter than everyone else.

One thought is to try to come up with evidence for the hypothesis that women tend to go into psychology not because they like psychology, but because it's preferable to, say, engineering or nuclear physics. I know several people who have degrees in psychology who have never had any intention of working in the field. They merely wanted what was percieved to be an easy degree.

I would try to focus on discrimination issues. Find data that shows females do less well in the scientific fields than males, less called on in class, and such. These factors may be a contributing factor. Remember, in psychology it's important to stress the multiplexity of issues and not just focus on one single factor.

There are usually more females enrolled in college to begin with, but not quite that much of a difference. Perhaps like others have suggested it is easier.

its because it can be seen as a "smart" field to get into. I am a Psy major and most of my class are 80 percent female or greater. there is research that shows more men major in psychology when the economy is bad, but when its good its mostly women.

I find that the rise of men in psyc is due to the rise of "major changes" from a men's major to something more easier.

I think women are oriented around people and men around things, generally speaking.

I just graduated with a BA in Psychology.
I've never heard of any good reason why this is; in fact, I've never heard anyone discuss it.

It seems the teacher just wants to see what your current understanding of psychology is. Just write 1 1/2 pages of pure BS and you should be fine. If you come up with at least a decent theory and back it up with examples, there's no reason you should get an A. Really.

*edit*

Actually our insightful friend Moonbeam hit on a good point. Women are very thought/emotion oriented while men are centered around more tangible things (ex. business / polysci / anything that == material gain). That could be a good starting point!

Yup, women need to know why things happen, men accept things that happen (well simplified, the world is full of wussies)

Let us know if you get the right answer. At my school, the EE building is right across the street from Psych so sometimes they have classes in there and it makes me sad. Why do they get all the hot girls while we are stuck with the dregs?

It could be that thinking of people in terms of dregs just isn't really RealCOOL.

Women gossip, that's what they do. They talk about everything with each other, why not get paid for it?

Here is my first reaction.... I'm a Grad student at Loyola working towards professional licensing as a counselor....

Basically men and women have different feelings about realtionships, I can't recall the author of this sentiment...

Women fear NOT being in relationship, men fear being TOO involved in relationship...

they like to feel 'in touch' with people because according to my anthropology course, when they discuss things, they do not want to get to the point, they want to listen.

well, look at couples. if a guy's wife has a problem, do they care about having the solution? or would they rather talk about it. girls like to listen, thus, thats why its probable to find them abundant in this field.
