Psychiatrists think Cruise should have head examined

The American Psychiatric Association is concerned that some comments by Tom Cruise could prevent people who need help from getting it.

The ?Last Samurai? star has been blasting psychiatry, and reportedly said the profession should be ?outlawed.? ?I think [psychiatry] is an utter waste of time,? Cruise said, according to IMDB.com.

?There?s nothing scientific about it. Communication is a good thing, but I think people get more mentally out of having a good meal or going for a walk. I think psychiatry should be outlawed.?

?It?s like arguing that the earth is flat,? Dr. James Scully, the Medical Director of the American Psychiatric Association, told The Scoop. ?Psychiatry is a branch of medicine supported by substantial research. . . . Comments like that are absurd. . . . If someone is suffering and needs to get help, it would be a shame if they do not get the help that could help them because a celebrity says something.?

Would Dr. Scully welcome a dialogue with Cruise? ?A dialogue? Yes. We?d welcome an open dialogue. A Scientology speech? No,? says Dr. Scully, referring to Cruise?s religion, which is opposed to psychiatry. ?We don?t find discussions about Scientology useful.?

Tom Cruise is an idiot. Therefore, people who listen to him are idiots as well. When are people going to wake up and realize that being a successful actor does not make you a freaking expert on the world? Damn, people are dumb.

I think there are some serious problems with psychology, mostly centering around the fact that they get to decide who is 'sick' and who is 'sane', and everyone just believes it because they're doctors and they MUST know what they're talking about.

However, I'm schizophrenic, and schizophrenia isn't something that can be cured by a 'good meal' or a 'walk'. I shudder to think where I would be if I hadn't seeked help when I did.

Try telling that to someone like Tom Cruise who believes in this garbage.

Scientologists are freaking morons, L Ron Hubbard (the father of Scientology) joked with his fellow Sci Fi authors about how he could start a religeon...

One of the tricks to creating a cohesive group is to demonize another group, they choose Psychiatrists as their group's demon.

Only huge tools like Cruise buy into this crap

Let's not forget John Travolta and his craptacular movie Battlefield Earth which was based on a book written by Hubbard.

I enjoyed Battlefield earth, watching Travolta in that movie was the funniest thing I've seen in a while.

This is a longstanding principle of Scientology. I presume they feel threatened by the psychiatric profession, and they have always rejected it and said it should be outlawed. This is just another illustration of the fact that even a talented actor can be completely empty-headed.

I would say give the stranger more credence, they have a better chance of having finished high school.

I think psychiatry is valid, however I believe a lot of psychiatrists are a little dirty when it comes to making sure people don't ever quite get better so as to better pad their pockets.

Since scientologists are all certified wackos, it's no wonder they have a problem with psychiatry.

I don't so much think it has to do with individual Scientologists being crazy (I don't think they are any crazier than anyone else, just more gullible). The rejection of psychiatry comes from the "church" itself, and I think it is really a matter of them not wanting the competition. Scientology seems to be more of a self-help program than a religion, and I gather they think that if people get help from psychiatrists or psychologists, they will not need the church, nor will they continue to make generous donations to it.

he's right, psychiatry is whack, and even psychiatrists acknowledge that the drugs only "help" in 25% of cases.... so you think the other 75% of people arent getting fkd up? thats why psychology, not psychiatry can be helpful.... but psychiatrists mix in drugs too often, it should only be used in extreme cases...

Just because he thinks he's all well and good doesn't mean other people don't have problems... talking it out is a big part of resolution. Someone specialized to do such a thing isn't a waste of time for all.
