PSX Modchips

Can an idiot install them? i.e. the only soldering exeperience I have is wire=>wire, and I still burn myself terribly doing that.

And where can I buy them? Not using it for anything illegal - my PSX CDs are starting to get scratched to hell and it's time to fire up the backups.

Model 5501.

I don't know much, but there was someone that posted their successful mod..

It did NOT look easy. It took them many hours, IIRC.

Because we have an unusually high concentration of people that take obsessively good care of optical media and a few of them believe in the DMCA. All I wanna do is play some retro PSX games and emulation doesn't do it for me.

I know xBox and PS2 ain't easy - somthing like 30 leads to solder to tiny points on either one. PSX looks to top out at 8 leads, but I can't find any place to buy them that doesn't look shady.

Oh. I guess I don't know what a PSX is, I thought you meant PSx as in PS1 and/or PS2.. heh.

If you've never soldered SMDs, then don't bother trying. Even with "only" 8 wires, the pads are so small that you have to be fairly proficient just to keep your iron in place.

First let me say I do not (cough) condone this activity.

That being said, if hypothetically someone wanted to mod a ps1 my advice to them would be to get the oldest ps they could find. Subsequent versions kept getting harder and harder to mod (more leads, smaller pads, etc).
I'm not even gonna try with my ps2.

Should I go nuts on an old motherboard or somthing?

/eyes dead PMac 6100

Just how small are we talkin here? Millimeter? Less? They look f'n huge (I don't have the PSX in front of me at the moment - managed to lock my key in my bedroom and need to wait for my dad to get back with the spare)

Just get someone to do it for you. I mod all m yfriend's stuff. xbox, ps2, psx, they're all the same.

Don't worry, I am an idiot and I installed the modchip.
However, a better option is to buy a modded psx.

uncle wai,
Me too. :^D The first time I ever soldered was on my ps1. It was quite a hack job, but that was 4 years ago and it still works.

If you live near NYC - go to chinatown and get them to mod it for you. I did it years ago for like $15 bux. Just drop it off and come back an hour later.

I got a couple mod chips lying around if still needed...there not too bad to install...the later the model the harder though...like i think the 9K models are just like the PS2...small little points to solder...but a 5K model shouldnt be too hard...
So long as u got a steady hand and know that only a small ammount of solder is "enough" there fairly easy to do though...i did a couple about 3 years ago and they still work like a champs

I heard PS2 is very hard, but PSX is very easy... But if you're unsure, you should just pick up a PSX boot disc. It's easier than soldering....

They sell them at easybuy2000... I got my Dance Dance Revolution pads there a long time ago.

5501's are the easiest to install to IMO!

I used to sell and install mod chips, my personal PSX is a 5501 and they rock for installation 😀

they are not hard to install at all... just be careful and you'll be done in 30-45 mins.

Hint for successful soldering: get a SMALL solder iron... they come in different sizes and wattages... go small. PSX is a piece of cake... under an hour for a first time job. And, it'll give you the experience and confidence to tackle the PS2 some day down the road.

Found a 1001 model at Goodwill (4x the RAM, supposedly ignores media descriptors and therefore doesn't need to be chipped)

Confirmation on the media descriptor point?

Exactly. the 55XX are fairly easy. 90XX are the ones to be careful about. Ps2 is like 23 wires that are hard. The xbox is only like 7 or so and from the pics I have seen its not that hard.

DANGER!! DANGER!! Stay away from these people.

They can be swapped and you have to use a paperclip to hold the door open. I forget the whole procedure.
