PSU woes, should I just get an antec?

Well, my old 300W antec wasnt enough to power an nvidia 6800, so I decided to go find a nice reasonably priced alternative upgrade PSU. I started off with a generic 350W PSU, but noticed what seemed like a little slowdown within the windows environment, etc. Not to mention occasionally at boot, It would hang until i powered off the computer, then flipped the switch on the back of the PSU to completely power it off and on again. I figured that this was quite a bad sign, and decided to go back and swap it for something slightly better. I went with a 500W Allied PSU... much better design with what seems like a solid casing and 2 fans. However, I got it home, powered it up... it started to detect drives, and... sat there. I restarted it, and it did the same thing. I then flipped the PSU power off, and on again, rebooted and it worked like a charm. Virtually the same issue as the highly generic 350W I had just returned. IT seems to perform like a champ once it boots, but that start up worries me a lot. Should I just go back and get a 350W antec? I had absolutely no problems like this with my old 300W Antec PSU.

I currently have 4 case fans, 2 fans on the PSU, an Nvidia 6800OC with 2 fans that plug into the PSU, 2 UDMA133 HDs(not running RAID), a CD-ROM drive, a DVD burner, and the heatsynch fan as my major power drains. Oh well, i'm rambeling... return it for the Antec? Flash the bios? Need more info?

Thanks,
Korp

Try the same psu with only the bare essentials working - see if that makes a difference

One hdd, one cd, 2 fans 🙂

this is the PSU i'm currently working with. I even tried flashing my bios to see what the deal is. I have as of yet been unable to find any loose connectors or anything... I guess I'll try booting with the bare bones minimum and stress test it to see if it is indeed the PSU. It just seems strange that this phenomina would start as soon as I put a new PSU in if that was not the culpret.
