Looking for a PSU with removable cables that has high efficiency and is a good brand. Will be powering 2x PATA HDDs, 3700+ AMD64, DVD+-RW, and 6600GT AGP. I don't have any need for SATA at the moment but it would be nice if it had compatabity w/ SATA. PCI-E connectors would be nice if I ever upgrade to it. I would like the removable cables because with the Antec P180, cable management can be a pain and I don't have good cable management skills so I don't want to see what would happen when we collide, hence remoable PSU cables.

Edit: Also, for my PC to be more quiet, I could possibly use one that is fanless. The way the P180 is seperated should be able to keep it cool without a fan.

PS: Looking for some round IDE cables also, anything I should have in mind (first time using them).

I just got an Opteron 165 and a 7900GT, and Im having trouble turning it on with the 7900GT's power cable plugged in. Boots up fine w/o graphics card plugged in, but gives a message stating graphics card is underpowered, could cause damage.

My PSU is a Antec Smartpower 2.0 500W. Anyone know what my problem could be?

Enermax isn't exactly a respected brand last time I checked rs1089 :D Probably not high efficiency also.

Enermax is one of the better/best consumer PSUs.

The M12 series of Seasonic will be out in about 30days. The main harness will be
hardwired and the remainder modular. It will be offered in 500, 600 & 700W flavors.

Better SMPSs are avalible than the above two but look to commercial server/workstation units.

Out of those in the link, I would go with either the enermax liberty PSUs or the antec NeoHE PSUs. Thing is though, a good number of people have had problems with NeoHE power supplies. I'm not sure if its specific to only some motherboards and such but definitely stick with reputable brands of PSUs that have been proven to be stable, efficient, reliable, and all the other good things. Just make your decision and i'm sure people in the forum will help you decide whether the psu you choose is a good one.

P.S. the enermax liberty series is actually very good, its got active PFC, I think it has a minimum of 80% efficiency at medium load and is quiet. The only crappy thing about it is the fact that it has sata and molex connectors on the same leads....wtf lol

Wow, is it expected to be better then the enermaxs?

The NeoHE PSUs got really bad ratings with lots of problems so I'm staying clear of them.

Quick question on the removable cables on the power supplies since I have never used them. Is their like a string that you move. Ex. One string of 3 moltexs that can be removed from the PSU. Another ex. One string of 2 SATA and a 24pin connector that can be removed or pluged in.

And at 80% typical it's more efficient than most.

A modular Seasonic (M12) would be nice, but I don't think it'd be "better" than the Liberty. Reliability and power output-wise.

For Modular i'd recommend the Hiper Type-R 580W Modular - Chrome (also available in Blue & Black)

Well, the Enermax Liberty 500W (or 550W I forget) looks like it should do it. Just a couple questions on the P180 tho.... how do you change the speeds on the fans? What fans can you change the speeds on?

Yea, the Hiper has very low efficiency which isn't exactly a good thing. My only question now is how good the Enermax will wire into a P180 case.....

Maybe you are confusing frequency with efficiency....Specifications
Power Input:
Voltage: 100~120 VAC
Current: 8/5A
Frequency: 60/50Hz


Please provide links that state how efficient the hiper Type R is...

For some reason I see no mention of the Hiper Type R`s efficiency on there site or on any other site...

But at my advanced age maybe my eyesight is going on me...

Here is what they said:

To our consternation, the efficiency rating of this power supply worked against its other substantial improvement. At light load, its rating is a paltry 64.4% - the lowest value for any of the power supplies we tested! Increasing the load also increases the efficiency rating to between 76.0% and 76.6%, but this unit wins no prize for efficiency, though these readings are acceptable.

It has a max output of 630W & 38A on the +12V rails (combined) Spec Sticker



On a side note, look up the reviews on the MGE Magnum as they seem to be quite good.

Are the power cables on the Enermax long enough for the P180 case? For the P180, can you add a fan controller to the case? Because with the front panel closing it might knock the knobs on the controller.

Homework OP, http://www.silentpcreview.com/ has three reviews of the P180. One is a
full system build. If I were going to build using this case, what SPCR offers would not be
ignored. SPCR has reviewed Enermax PSUs and does measure cabling in thier reviews.
Type of mainboard will be a factor because of ATX jack placement on the board, not all
boards are the same=more homework ;)

I have a Micro ATX motherboard and I have read both the review on the PSU and Case.

It all depends on the review, most find no issues with the voltage regulation (just like the 2 I have do not suffer that issue).

My links concerned the MGE you recomended.

If your happy with the two Hypers=a good thing. A PSU w/chrome baby dicks is strange :D
I use Zippy/Emacs and Fortron, an Enhance awaits the next build.
