So I was thinking of getting a second 6800 GT for an SLI setup. I have a venice 3500+ @2700 and the 6800 GT @ 415/1120. My current psu is a fotron 530w with 18A on the 12v rail. My psu can barely keep up with my current system, so before getting a second video card, I will be getting a new PSU. I have 1 IDE HDD, 1 DVD-RW/CD-RW combo drive, an ASUS A8N-SLI and the cpu and vid card above. Would I need a dual rail PSU or should a high end single rail one do it, such as 34-36A on the 12v. I heard dual rail PSUs suck for overclocking, but if my current PSU gives 18A, and the dual rail gives 18Ax2, will I be able to get a higher oc (my current vcore maxes out at 1.58 cuz it doesnt have enough power.) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Don't get SLI! 2 6800GT's in SLI is about ~$600. 1 7800GTX is about ~$525. The 7800GTX outperforms the dual 6800GT's. Just sell your 6800GT and get a 7800GTX. That way, you won't have to buy a new PSU.

that is, if you can find someone to buy it off of you. otherwise you're not going to tell them that if they save up a little bit more, a 7800 would be the choice over an 6800's.

I understand, but lets say I did get a second 6800 GT, what would you recommend. I didnt ask what my options were, I just wanted to know what a good PSU for two 6800 GTs and an OCed system would be.

Well, since you feel like wasting money on uneeded things, ill reccomend the best PSU's for you (not joking, these are the best)

PC Power and Cooling 510W (best out there, cant beat it)

Seasonic S12 600W (second best)

Enermax Noisetaker 600W (really good)

OCZ Powerstream 600W (pretty good)



there, those are the best choices

If I did that, my system is already in need of a new PSU, and since a 7800 GTX uses more power that a 6800 GT, I would definately need a bew PSU anyways.

If I did that, my system is already in need of a new PSU, and since a 7800 GTX uses more power that a 6800 GT, I would definately need a bew PSU anyways.

Wrong, it uses less power, as it was made with better manufacturing processes (i think the GTX is 110nm, while the 6800's are 130nm)

The smaller the manufacturing process, the less voltage required, the less heat that is made, etc etc (thats why the San Diego and Venice cores operate cooler and with less energy then the old Clawhammer/Newcastle cores for CPU's)

Thats what everybody says, but not what the reviews show, and it does not run cooler than a 6800 GT, both around 75-80C

Show me a legitamite review that measures the power usage and heat using professional tools. (Monitoring built into the motherboard and video card aren't always accurate)

Forget anything about upgrading. I need a new PSU anyways. Even if I did get the 7800 GTX, it uses more power than the GT, not the Ultra, since the Ultra uses 1 more molex connector, and in general, it uses more power. What PSU would you recommend for my system with 1 6800 GT @ ultra speeds.

The difference between the GT and Ultra is at most 10 watts, and likely nowhere near there. Using the GT at Ultra speeds will use just as much power as an Ultra anyways.... which uses more power than a 7800 GTX. :p

As to your question though, I'd get Enermax, Antec, PC Power and Cooling... these are the ones I have experience with.

Right now I'm using an Enermax 535W power supply, heres a link

It has 36A combined on the 12V rails (2), and it's very stable.

EDIT: I'm using 2x 6800GTs in SLI.
