PSU Smells of Smoke...

I recently swapped a new motherboard + processor into an older computer. The previous one was a P2 400 w/ an Intel Board, and the new is a P3 933 w/ an AOpen board. Now when I pressed the power switch, the computer wouldn't turn on. Now to test if it was the PSU, I did the paperclip trick by connecting the PS_ON to ground (Green to Black wires). The PSU turned on (I could see/hear/feel the fans blowing) and it didnt smoke yet. Then I plugged the ATX power connector back into the motherboard to try again. Then I pressed the on switch and the computer booted, but then I smelled smoke and quickly unplugged it. It was only on for 1-2 seconds. Is it safe for me to continue and turn it back on again or is it permenantly fried? Did I overload it with the paper clip?

I have a hunch its the PSU, as it is quite old. Not only is it generic, but it's 3-4 years old and has a lot of use

Yes, those PSUs run on smoke! If you let the smoke out, they're toast....😉

I have cheap PSUs fail all the time, I wouldn't be surprised if the 933 needs more juice than the PSU can provide.
