Im about to build a new system and am trying to figure out what kind of PSU to get. The system will be ATX w onboard sound, GF4 ti4400 have a floppy, 1 possibly 2 IDE drives,
a CD-RW and probably another CD-ROM, and an XP 1800+.

will a 300w PSU be sufficient? if not then why?

currently im runing a t-bird 1Ghz with all the above equipment on a 300w PSU and it works fine as far as I can tell.

Also any links on this topic would be apreciated. I couldnt dig any up myself.

thanks

For that speed processor, AMD recommends a supply that can provide 30-amps on the 5-volt line. Some 300 watters do, many do not. You can always just give it a whirl.

I had an enermax 330w that would not run an 1800+ xp when i had 4 case fans plugged in. I would reccomend a 350w quality brand.

Ya know, if you need a new case with that system...you could always check out the Enligh 7237 case. The case is very durable and it comes with a 340W PSU. The case runs for about $60 or so...(really cheap) and the PSU is VERY reliable.

Then you can transfer all the hardware from your current case and put it in the 7237. And leave your current mobo/cpu inside your current case and as time goes on, buy various parts for it and hopefully you'll have another spare computer soon. 🙂

thanks. Actualy I do intend to keep the kurrentbox intact (only taking the cd-rw from it) so i will be geting a case too.

hopefuly i can find something decent from newegg for under $60 bucks.

saw an enlight for $48 that has a 350w amd aproved psu that looks well designed if i remeber corectly.

Keep in mind that AMD approves powersupplies for certain speeds. Something that says "AMD Approved" may only be approved up to a certain processor.

Yes, a quality 300w psu will be fine. I would look for one with a 180w combined +3.3v & +5v.

That might be the case that I was talking about. About $45 - $60 bucks. It's from Enlight (model 7237) and comes with a really nice PSU (2 versions... 300W and 340W). But this was like 2 months ago when I bought the case...I don't know about the current prices and features.

I was mistaked about the newegg one. aparantly they dont beleive in disclosing he PSU part number on the ones included with cases. so Ill buy em seperate this time.

I think the part I was confused abouyt is I was unaware of the combined power rating. Most of the ones amd recomends for xp2000+ are > 180 with 180 being the very minumum. I knwo nothing of electronics. so was suprised to se that some 300w PSU perfomr as well as 350W ones.

looks like im not going to get away with spending less than $75 on a case this time.
