PSU Question

I would like to know if the antec neopower 480W will be able to handle this computer:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice

DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Platinum System Memory

Antec NeoPower 480W Power Supply

ANTEC P180 Case

2XHitachi Deskstar T7K250 250GB Serial ATA II 7200RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer

nvidia 7800GTX or GT (when it comes) (might upgrade to SLI at a later time)

Thermalright XP-90 CPU cooler + Panaflo 92mm fan

Any opinions are greatly appreciated,

hmm, possibly, but prolly not, ESP with sli... go with about a 550 or more, i suggest Antec as a brand....

you might get lucky with that 480w, looks to me that u might be right on the dot.... if u want to and check to see if the voltages are low, (using a DVM, not cmos voltages), run prime95 or a game heavy in cpu and gfx while monitoring the voltage.

also get a 2nd opinion

I'd only sleep at night with 500w or better. But if you have excellent rails then it's not to far fetched.

If you are willing to spend and want ease of mind get this OCZ powerstream

I am getting fortron Blue storm for my rig, it is almost the same as you, except the san diego 3700+ for CPU and x800xl for vid card, and I know I will be fine.

I'd say yes. The 7800 series uses less power than the 6800 series from what I've read. 480W is plenty to go around, especially with the newer dual rail Antec Neopowers.

Well if they're the same price then by all means get the OCZ. I've heard good things about it, despite Antec also being a very reputable brand with a longer history. I was just saying that if you were stuck with an Antec, you probably wouldn't need to worry about it too much either.

The $75 Enermax 495 Noisetaker V2.0 is a better PSU. I don't like the modular approach. The contact resistance will result in voltage drop at high current. Course vendors are pumping modular cause it's cheaper to build.

The $80 500 watts Fortron is another excellent choice. Enermax and Fortron are more efficient at converting AC to DC. They are the BEST values in high-end PSUs. You will pay more for the Antec/OCZ name.

Any quality 450 watts PSU will work with your setup. My system has 1GB RAM and one HD. The peak load is 192 watts. Even with a more powerful video card, your max load should not exceed 300 watts. Add another 50 watts for USB, lights, extra fans, etc....
