PSU question: What's my maximum wattage?

ndee

Lifer
I have a Heihachi 300W PSU. It shows me that the maximum output is 140W on the +3.3V and +5V line. And directly under that, it tells me Maximum output: 300W. Now what shall I believe?

this means that combined your total output for your 3.3v and 5v lines is 140W. The total output supported by the 3.3v line and the output of the 5v line is likely to be greater than 140W though.

Hypothetical example:
3.3v --------------> 80W
5v ----------------> 90W

together they are seemingly capable of 170W, but the total draw off both can only be 140W.

The same goes for the 300W rating. This includes the 12v line as well.

another hypotheical example:
3.3v + 5v --------> 140W
12V ---------------> 200W

together they are seemingly capable of 340W, but the total draw off both can only be 300W.

This information is usually printed on a sticker on your PSU to get the correct numbers

Thanks!

Well it only gives me the Wattage for this +3.3V and +5V line. For the other lines, it just writes the Ampere. If you need those numbers to calculate the total wattage, lemme know. You think that will be enough for a Athlon XP + my current rig - CPU?

Watts = Volts * Amperes

I'm running an XP1800+, 2 HDDs, DVD, CD-RW, Audigy, NIC, 56k Modem, Various USB accessories. All off my 300W PSU without any problems.

So unless you have a whole bunch of hard drives, and wickedly OCed processor, or are running water cooling off your PSU, then there is no problem using the PSU you have

Don't worry, HEC is a real PSU manufacturer, and they don't jack up the spec, their PSU is solid.

Niiiiiice, thanks. I "modded" it with a ultra silent Papst 8412NGL fan 🙂
