PSU Question (Im confused) Crossfire Support VS SLI Support???

Ok I am building a new rig. I have decided to go with an intel based board, so I could use a single nvidia solution or go with crossfire from ati.

I am confused on the power supply.

This first one, Thermaltake Toughpower W0172RU 850W states:

NVIDIA SLI Support: Yes
ATI CrossFire Support: Yes

Then this second one I am looking at, is the OCZ ModXStream OCZ900MXS 900W, but this one only states:

NVIDIA SLI Support: Yes

But does NOT say anything about Crossfire is support. Though it does have the correct connections to hook up 2 ATI cards in crossfire (See ---> Example....

So my question is, would that OCZ work with Crossfire, even though it does not state if it is, or is not supported? Thanks!

Yes the ModXstream would support Crossfire, but note it does not have any 8pin PCI-Express connectors, meaning you would have to use a 2x 6pin->1X 8pin converter on any GPU that has an 8 pin slot...not an ideal situation.

All that indicates is that the power supply did or did not go through (and pass) ATI's or NVIDIA's logo testing. Plenty of people have SLI or Crossfire systems running on power supplies that don't carry either logo.

A supply that passes certification for SLI or Crossfire is likely to be just as well suited to the other standard, assuming it has appropriate connectors (as HOOfan 1 points out). As far as the power supply is concerned, they are both pretty much the same thing.

The ModXstream has 4 6 pin connectors. The 6 pin to 8 pin connector shipping with the GTX 280 REQUIRES 2 6pin connectors. That means if with a single GTX 280 you would have 3 6pin connectors tied up. If you decided to add a second GTX 280 then you wouldn't have enough PCI-E connectors.

Not to mention that the Thermaltake is just all around better than the OCZ.

they sell a single 6pin to 8pin adapter....but that kind of defeats the purpose now doesn't it? As it won't support the full 150Watts available through a 8 pin connector

Yeah I read it. But im not going to put 2x GTX 280, just 2x 4780's in crossfire like I had posted above. I guess im going with Thermal then, I wish they had modulars or whatever on it =(
