PSU question for DFI LanParty Ultra-D.

Being the genius I am, I didn't realize that when I bought this DFI board that it used a 24-pin connector, instead of a 20. The PSU I have in my machine right now is an Antec TruePower 480--is this going to be enough? I heard that the extra four pins are used for PCI-Express--if I'm not using SLI and running an ATI X800XL, that doesn't require external power, do I really need a 24-pin compatible PSU? I want to overclock the chip to whatever it's max will be. Will this be impossible without a new PSU?
 
Ok, I checked out the site, and I need to get a new PSU. Man, this upgrade is a lot more substantial than I thought it would be.
 
They always are. However, unless you plan on running a ton of HDDs or a high drain video cards, you will be fine with 480w. Just get a 20-24 pin adapter
 
I want to OC pretty heavily. I run two optical devices, a Raptor, a 200GB WD, an Audigy 2, and a Radeon X800XL. Everything I read suggests that I'd be running at the minimum specs with 22A on the 12V, and I want to run rock-solid at a OC. Man, I can't believe how expensive PSUs are getting, though! I bought my TruePower 480 2 years ago for $70... the same thing sells for $120 now!

Whoa, what the hell? Thats crazy. How can they make such a generalized statement as to how much power is needed. If youre running a basic video card (X600), a couple hard drives, 1GB ram, and a non overclocked 90nm CPU, there is no way you *need* 480W.

It's not clear to me what the "issue" is. All I'm reading is that you need a 480w minimum PS for this board, but why? What exactly about this board is so power hungry that you need that high of a PS as as minimum?

 
I'm the dark myself. I never thought I ran a power-hungry system, but this board's requirements are unbelievable. It even says that I shouldn't run an adapter. And with good PSUs averaging well over $100, it seems like I've got no choice but to drop serious coin to make sure I've got power to spare.
 
Ok, I just looked at the Venice OCing thread and brentpresley, with a Seasonic Super Tornado 400W, is OCing in the 2.8GHz range with an Athlon 3500+, and his PSU and mine are rated the same on the 12V rail. I may be all right after all--I dropped him a line, hopefully he'll respond and let me know if he's using an adapter or modding at all, or if he just plugged the 20-pin right in and ran with it.
 
i shouldn't have used the word "issue" i guess, it's just what they say. anyway, i can see their insistence on a true 24 pin connector. the 480? well, i think thats a bit high myself. the board does take 4 different power connectors although i ran mine at stock with only 2 before i realized it.

i dunno what to tell you, there are people over there running with less. i didn't design the board and i'm certainly no expert, but if you're going to run a high end board and oc ;ole mad, why not just get the recommended/required psu.

i pulled the x-clio 450 (31a on the dual 12's, 24 pin connector) i had and got a TPII 550 and it solved my stability issues. keep in mind the x-clio is only rated for a max combined 150w on the 3.3 and 5 plus the 12, for alll its amps, was very weak, dropping ~.20 from idle to load.
 
a psu with an adapter will noot be the same as a 24 pin. it probably wont be any better than if u didnt get the adapter. just get a 24pin adapter. i saw a forton one on actbuy.com or something like that for just 70 shipped.
 
You definately will be able to run that rig with your current PS. I ran my ultra-d with a 6800gt and a winchester 3000+ on my Antec TruePower 330w PS. Just DO NOT get a 20-24 pin adapter, they are suppossed to cause lots of problems with this board.

While you can run the board with a 20 pin PS, I don't know how well you can OC with one. You might want to get a nice 24 pin PS anyways if your going to be OCing; the better the PS, the cleaner the power the mobo gets, the higher the OC.
 
from my undrestanding, the 20-24 pin adapter is bad news...

you're better off just using the 20 pin psu as it is w/o the adapter... all you ahve to do is plug it into the 24 pin slot but leave the top 4 open and your psu should work just fine.

when my powerstream 470 died, i used my 20 pin psu for a week and had no problems...

because i knew there would be power issues though, i lowered my oc from 2.8 to 2.4 while the new one came.
