psu good enough?

I was thinking of buying a 9800 pro , but I am worried my psu will not supply enough power for it and cause problems. I have a HP pavillion with a 280 watt psu(not for sure what brand, probably a cheaper one).

I don't have enough money to buy the 9800 and a psu.
My other choice was to do the trade-up on the ati site for the 9600xt as it does not have a seperate power connecter and would not overload my psu. Would also be a cheaper solution which is good right now.

Is there anybody here that has done the trade-up program and did it go well?

I'm running a 6800NU on the cheapie 300W in my 4 year olds computer now, seems to work fine. I'd guess they take more juice than 9800s.

I am upgrading his psu to an Antec 380 True Power though, just to be sure.

BTW- the 380 True Power should be arriving Monday. If you want the 300W cheapie, you can have it for the shipping cost. Merry Christmas.

PM me if you want it.

If it is a cheaper supply... putting it under heavy load may cause it to provide unstable power. If you are uncertain.. maybe get something like a zalman 300W or 350W power supply. They are getting pretty cheap. I always replace the power supply in cheap cases I get... usually the really cheap cases that come with a PSU ... the PSU is like $10 or so... just absolute cr&p. Anyways... The zalman power supplies are also "noiseless" they say so it'll quieten your system down too.

280watt should be fine. I've run my 6800 Ultra at 350/1100 off a 235watt supply for several benches just to test it, it all depends on the quality of the supply really and I think HP uses good supplies. 9800pro is not so demanding. You don't mention the rest of your specs, like CPU speed.

And good luck finding a high power supply in one of those micro ATX SFC (?) sizes anyway's. And make sure that HP has an AGP slot too.

Well I am not going to have enough cash to buy the 9800 pro . I have narrowed it down to 2 cards from newegg.
The rosewill 9600xt or the sapphire 9800 Atlantis. Will the Antlantis beat the 9600xt as it has 8 pipes instead of 4?

9700pro's are showing up in the FS/Trade forum for $120, you might want to get one of those.
