PSU for GPU

I'm planning on a new build using the Antec P150 case that comes with a 430W PSU.

It's going to be a pretty basic build with a Core 2 Duo E6600, 2 gigs of RAM, a single harddrive, a single optical drive and propably a X-Fi Extreme Music soundcard.

And for a videocard I'm debating whether I should go with a 7900 GTX or wait for the 8800 GTS.

Now for the questions:

On eVga's site they say that the minimum recommended PSU for their 7900 GTX is 450W. On Leadtek's site they say 350W.

Is eVga just playing it safe? Will the Antec 430W be enough for the kind of build I outlined above?

With regards to the power requirements of the 8800 GTS I know nothing is certain yet, but I did find this from a quick googling:

'documentation from NVIDIA recommand to use for the single GeForce 8800 GTX a power units not less than 450 W, GeForce 8800 GTS requirement are reduced to 400 W'

Can anyone verify this info at this time?

With all the new tech, I would go with a 650wt or above. Check our "Hot Deals" section for many deals on PSU's right now.

I'm not sure about what is meant by 'With all the new tech'?

Old or new, if the required power is 400W, why shouldn't a 430W Antec PSU be enough?

Ridiculous!
Do you even know how much power that system would draw? My [educated] guess is ~350w, which means almost 27amps on the 12v rails combined. The neohe has 32amps on the 12v rails combined. More than enough even for the dx10 card I would say.
Bottom line: Ronin you have all you need there. Nice rig... nuff said.😀

That's what I thought. And thanks 🙂

I'm really starting to look forward to building this rig as I'm still on a 2 GHz P4 Northwood with 512 MB RD-RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro card. Let's just say that I'm expecting a slight performance increase...

A suggestion: If you're building the rig right now, dx10 won't be out for a couple weeks. Get the 7900gtx (evga) and step up to a 8800gts when it comes out or in 3 months. Strategic buying 😎

Thanks for the suggestion, but for some reason the eVGA cards are extremely expensive here (in Denmark).

Lowest price I could find on the net for the 7900 GTX is $792!

(And even though their step up program also extends to Europe, I would still have to pay for shipping, making it that more expensive.)

To compare, I can get a Leadtek 7900 GTX here for $476. (Which is an acceptable price for me - it's even less than the $500 I paid for my GeForce 4400 back when that was released.)

So for now, I'll just wait and see how the 8800 GTS performs and at what price it gets introduced...

It's all relative. A good quality 430W psu is fine - but an el-cheapo 430W psu probably not.

Heck, about a month ago I worked on a computer that had a 6800 and a cheap hp 200W psu.
 
Wow.. normally I wouldn't say 430w is enough for that, but maybe I'm wrong.

My AXP with a 9600, 1gb ram, one optical drive and one HDD needed 400 watts to get running nicely. But maybe that was cause I had it overclocked.

If it was me, I surely wouldn't run a 430w PSU with an 8800 regardless of whether it needs 400w or 450w. I hear lots of people saying you'd need a seperate independent PSU, and I wouldn't disagree.

That's just my paranoism 😛
