It might help if you told us whether or not you want to run dual 6800U's or dual 6600gts, as there is a gigantic power usage difference...Second of all, why do you want to spend so much on a mobo and diss on probably the most important part in the system?

No I don't. Planning to run dual 6600GTs and was wondering if the Athena Power (A+GPB) 500W should do. link. Is this a quality PSU or can you reccomend me one?

I'm using a Vantec Stealth 520 PSU. ZipZoomFly has it for $96. It's running my A8N-SLI with 2 6600gts, 4 hard drives,4 case fans , etc. no problem. It's also REALLY quiet(at least compared to my last one). Hope this helps.:)

Thurgo,

I have just recently purchased a Asus SLI mobo and I looked at this Power Supply earlier from New Egg:
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=17-167-010&depa=0

I am using the power supply that came in the case that I ordered and it is 480W. I am running one nVidia 6800 card right now and it is running stable even when I play online games (mostly Unreal Tournament). The link for my case is below:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-105-146&depa=0

I decided to keep the 480W Power Supply to see if it will suffice for now and it is doing well so far. Please keep in mind I have not overclocked anything yet. I plan on overclocking the mobo, graphics card, and my RAM.

I will look to upgrade when I add another graphics card or if the overclocking gets to extreme for temperature. The 600w Power Supply link I pasted got great reviews but I do not think any of them are using a SLI mobo. For $50 it seems like a good deal. Others in here may be able to tell you if the link for the Power Supply that I posted would be good for you better than I could. I am just an ameteur and this was my first build completelty on my own. However, I will be happy to share any information if needed.

Good Luck

How does the 20/24 pin on the silencer work? Is it a 20pin that has an extra 4 pins that can be connected?

The Tagan, OCZ Mod & PowerStream, Enermax, Seasonic, Antec, and the Fortron Blue Storm psu's are recommended on a daily basis around here. All of these will power your SLI rig just fine.

You may want to read the The All-Encompassing Power Supply (PSU) Thread for additional insight.

OCZ Modstream 450w

Seasonic Super Silencer 460w

Enermax 460w EG465P-VE 24P

Tagan 480w TG-480

Forton Blue Storm 500w

OCZ PowerStream 520w (I own this one)

Antec True 550 EPS12v

Note: Please keep in mind that the units listed above are just a few popular selections, and there are other psu's that will power an SLI & non-SLI rigs just fine.

24-pin with adapter. Your mobo is 24-pin anyway

It was not a big deal at all. The plug will fit only one way. You just slide it around until it clips in. There will of cousre be some open holes or slots but that is the way it is designed. (I was concerned while building the computer and I wandered if I had it right). I talked to a friend of mine that is a real techno weenie and he confirmed my installation of the plug.

May be
I am wrong after reading Ribbon13's reply. I did not use an adapter. Ribbon, please let me know if I gave him incorrect information. I do not want to mess him up.

Just to be concise I did mean 24-pin and it comes with a 20-pin adapter. He's getting a 24-pin MB so keying doesn't matter because the clips will give hint to proper orientation.

Dual 6600GTs... firstly, that basically kills the point of SLI; secondly, a rig with an X800XL or single 6800GT might be a bit cheaper when you factor in that you don't have to get the SLI board. I'm just letting you know; other members, please do not make this a subject for overly heated debate.

In any event, a good Fortron, Seasonic, or other quality unit for around $80 would be fine, or even Antec's True380 if you get it from somewhere that's selling it cheap (a while ago a link was posted here to a site selling it for a mere $40).

Come to think of it, that would be one good use for them if you ran both as separate cards, except IIRC you can only use the primary card's outputs when you run in SLI.

I thought SLI was only used for certain games, and the SLI bridge would have no effect on the desktop?

The actual capability of SLI is only used for certain games (those that have SLI support through drivers or whatever to take advantage of it), but if my facts are straight that thing about the outputs is true.

I got the dual 6600gts just as an inexpensive way to get my feet wet w/SLI(Inexpensive being a relative term). I plan to build some budget systems using the 6600s and upgrade the SLI setup soon.

I can say that I have one 6800 and it is not a GT. I am running it in my Asus SLI mobo. I turned my vertiacal sync off in the nVidia properties and it is so FAST that I am going to have to slow it down some how. It is consistenly over 1000 FPH and the graphics are unbelievable. This SLI board really made a difference. I bet it really makes the newer graphics hungry games run smooth.
