PSU fan spinning at 100%

Hi All

Just build myself a new rig:

CPU - i7 2700k
VIDEO - PowerColour hd6970
RAM - 16gb dominator corsair
MOBO - Asus P8Z68-V Pro
PSU - Antec Quattro 850w
Case - Thermaltake Chaser mk-i
SSD - OCZ Agility 3 128gb

Very very happy with the performace, upgraded from a 6 year old machine.

One issue I have had is, after playing any particular game for 10-15 minutes the PSU fan will speed up to what sounds like 100% and never slows back down, Even after quitting the game and returning to the operating system (with maybe steam and a web browseer open).

The PSU isn't hot to touch and it isn't even blowing hot air...

Any recommendations are much appreciated!

Update: Turned the computer on this morning and the fan is still at 100%
Guess there's nothing wrong with it at the moment, but I did buy this PSU because it said it was quite 🙁

LOL, Antec Quattro 850W. They still sell these? These are noisy PSUs. Well, they are quiet if you have almost no load on them, but in normal usage (even outside of games) becomes noisy as you experienced. If you just bought it, see if you can return it for something else.

FWIW I used to own one, and it was easily the noisiest part of my computer.

With your parts and a single 6970, you only need somewhere around 500W of power. One reasonably priced and reasonably quiet PSU is the XFX Core 550W. They are often on sale with a rebate.

Gah, last time I take a suggestion from a salesman at an IT store. Wanted to get something a bit newer, but they didn't have anything else in stock so he 'highly' recommended me that. Probably trying to get rid of old stock lol.

Some time in the future, I might look into crossfire for the 6970... would 550w be enough for the system?

Cheers for the reply!

Yeah, probably trying to get rid of old stuff, haha. I think that PSU came out in 2008.

550W would not be enough for 6970 Crossfire. How certain are you of doing that, versus just replacing the 6970 with a single 7970 or 8970 when the time comes? The thing is that if you buy a higher capacity PSU "just in case" then you are not only spending more money up front, but you may be missing out on a PSU upgrade in the future. Well, lots of people feel that a PSU should be one component that they can use for many years, right? Sure, except PSU technology DOES change over time. Think back 7-8 years ago. Would you use an ATX PSU from back then if it worked perfectly? Well, back then it was an older ATX specification which called for more 3.3v and 5v power, and not as much 12v power. Thus, a 500W PSU back then would probably equal a 300W PSU now in terms of +12v output, which these days (but not back then) is of highest importance. Also, in recent years the quality of the DC output has grown significantly in the higher end units. Additionally, efficiency keeps growing. When the Quattro was made, 80Plus was new and all the rage. Since then we have had 80Plus Bronze, Silver, Gold and now even 80Plus Platinum models with efficiency that the old Quattro can't touch. Who knows what the future will bring?

hmm, you've definitely brought a lot of points I didn't even think of...
by the time i would probably be looking to do crossfire would probably be better to buy a second generation card.

cheers for the tips man!

guess i gotta pull out this PSU and re-cable in the new one 🙁

I paid $169 for mine. Strangely enough the PSU is starting to act quite again like when I first got it... although it does still have the occasional 100% spin up of the fan when the computer is sitting idle.

Might add that I'm in the land down under, can't get the rebates you guys get 🙁
Got it from www.computeralliance.com.au and they confirmed I can return it and trade it in for a PSU to equal or lesser value of my current one.

From a purely value for money pov, I was looking at the "Antec High Current Gamer" http://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts.aspx?qryPart=12919
Had some decent reviews (from what I read) and I would be using all but $10 of the value of my original part.

Would anyone recommend something better? Here's the list of their stock: http://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts.aspx?MainCategoryID=1&CategoryID=CPS

Cheers!

Are you ever going SLI? If not 650-750W is fine.

Corsair TX750 V2 Power Supply $150
Antec High Current Gamer 900W (HCG-900) $169
OCZ 850W ZX series Power Supply $199

are there 3 I would consider in the general price range.
