PSU DYING??

I just bought this new antec smartpower 500wat. Today its making a high pitched noise and really annoying. Its not so noisy but loud enough to get annoyed by it. Its not the fan, it may be something wrong. I dont know if its still safe to use this pc since i just bough new hardware.

Just an update. My psu just died. I tried to turn on my pc and the lights blinked then shutoff. The psu is making a really weird noise right now when plugged in.

High pitched whine near the edge of hearing - for me it's always been a transformer. Had an Antec do the same thing recently. Didn't bother RMA since it was older and I was running it on REALLY dirty power.

And, uh, yeah... You might want to unplug that PSU when you're not around it. Mine almost caught fire due to the failed transformer.

got my enermax noisetaker 485watt for $70 at newegg, high quality psu for sure, no problems, really nice product, painted shiny blue with gold fan grilles, and adjustable fan speeds....can't go wrong. PLENTY of power connectors, hard wired sata power connectors and everything...

I've got a PSU doing something similar. It will occasionally make a weird chirping noise; frequency's somewhere around 15KHz.

The OP's PSU is dead so he needs nothing further in this thread.

If it's in warrenty Jeff7, I'd RMA it. They are good about product support.
Only from my reading/study, I say, when caps start to short out the toroidal coils can be
stressed and sing. P4 boards are known to have toroidal sounds that cause no real problems
but Seasonic is known for silence, so RMA. Is it more noticable at first boot, when the PSU is
cool?? Sometimes caps that have dried out function better once warm. Repair techs will
get a board to POST by warming it up with a hair dryer 😉 It does not work often.

Ever notice that some have complained about shutting down the rig for vacation, only to
come back to a rig that won't boot? Then they change out the PSU and all's fine. Even in
stand-by the PSU will stay a bit warm. *shrugs*

Just a guess, nothing more.

I hope you are not running a poorly ventilated case, making the Seasonic's fan work for cooling air.

I do intend to RMA it, as you suggested. In time.🙂
I'm back home now - curious to see if it makes the noise here too. Thus far, it's running for a day, and no weird sounds yet. YET anyway.....
It's the unpredictablity of it that annoys me. I could run it for 2 days and have nothing happen. Then the next day, it'll chirp for 3hrs on end, and then just stop for no reason.

Doesn't seem to matter if it's cold booted or not. It just chirps whenever it feels like it. Nothing I do on the computer that affects the PSU load seems to change, cause, or stop the chirping. It just does it sometimes, and then stops.

The case is well ventilated. Antec SLK-3700AMB, with a 120mm intake, and 120mm exhaust. Case temp reads 36C right now.

Contrary to popular belief just becuase you have a 120 mm intake fan and a 120 mm exhaust fan doesnt mean the case is well ventilated!!

Cases are known to have dead spots created by who knows why. They just have dead spots where the air is not moving. You could even surmise that since the air is not moving in certain spots that the air is hotter than other areas of the case!

I have a dead spot in my case exasctly where the RAM is located!! So I had to set up a fan in front of my RAM to move the air.
For several reasons....
I do over clock and in doing so I o/c my ram also.
Another reason is becuase that part of my mobo is also hotter than the rest of the mobo.

So you might poke around inside your case and check for dead spots!!

Good Luck!!
