PSU Dilemma

Hi,

Im upgrading to a MSI Neo4 Platinum PCI-E, AMD 3500+ 64, and a BFG 6800ultra, I was wondering what psu would be best to use, I dont think I will be overclocking (maybe some time in the future),

The store is currently carrying Antec TrueBlue 480w, and a Antec TruePower 550w.

Would the 480w be effecient enough or 550w?

Or should I try some other PSU....

Hrmm

Also...

amd 64+ 3500 for 3800 at the cost of 6800ultra for a 6800gt.

plzz help!

I think you should be fine with the True 480W. However, if you are going to overclock that system or if you are planning to get another 6800U in the future, I would get the 550. It may be overkill for now, but you won't need to buy a better PSU later. I would go to the General Hardware forum section for that question, btw 🙂.

Well the mother board im getting is not SLI cause I dont think i can fork that much money out =)

Alright thanks =/ I hope it works lol

Some setups can easily draw enough to overstress a 460 watt PSU. Anyone with an OC'ed 5950 Ultra 256 MB and an OC'ed nForce II board can overtax some 460 watt PSUs.

Blanket statements are not very useful as far as PSU's go. You need to look at what method the manufacturer of a particular PSU uses to measure and rate that particular PSU. If it is enough on the +12v side, then it will work. If not, good luck!

Some of the 460 watt PSU are in fact only capable of 70 percent of their ratings in real world situations....that's 322 watts. More power anyone? Considering a STOCK 5950 Ultra 256MB draws 115 watts at default settings, an OC'ed Barton at 1.85 volts draws about the same, and 2 x 512 MB BH-5 RAM when OC'ed draws more than that, you can see real quick that some PSU's can be overwhelmed.

Wattage means little. We need to know what the amperage is on the 12V rail for those PSUs.

OK let me answer these more directly - an Antec TrueBlue 480W will be more than enough for his needs. He specifically asked about those Antec PSU's, and the question was answered. Comments about blanket statements are unnecessary given the context of his question.

Sure, a generic 450W $30 PSU would probably crap out - nobody here on AT in the right mind recommends generic PSU's and more importantly - he didn't ask about generic PSU's!

vohiep84 - you will have no problems with a 480W Antec PSU. An Enermax 450-470W PSU would also be more than enough for your needs.

I wouldn't trust either of the Antec units listed for his setup, unless there is no chance of upgrading or OC'ing. They are fine for out-of-the-box, but after reading the fine print supplied by Antec, their claims are stretched at best.

The rating system that they use, shows no way that either PSU listed could hold it's rated output under sustained OC'ed conditions. Neither will be useful for future upgrading as the new standard is dual +12v rail.

You should be fine with either. I currently run my set-up with an older TrueBlue 480w with only a 22A 12v rail. I'm oc'ing, using an addtional power connector for my 775 mobo, extra connector for my graphic card(oc'd), two optical drives, four hard drives, 3 120mm fans, 3 70mm fans and numerous firewire/usb devices. The new TruBlue's have a 28A 12v and I believe the 550w uses a 30A 12v rail.

Good Luck.
