......this is a very good thing. If it were fully utilized, the EB5 program would bring at least $7 billion annually and create or preserve 100,000 jobs per year. It's not much in the grand scheme of things -- there are currently about 130 million Americans with payroll jobs. But given the trauma inflicted upon American workers in the past three years, every little bit helps. And this is something the U.S. should be doing more

I agree with the author. Instead of letting horde and horde of people with no skill, no money, and not able to speak English get in the US ILLEGALLY, why not let people with the ability to hire LEGAL Americans and improve our economy?

I also believe in pick and choose the best of the best from other countries to become LEGAL US immigrants. Australia, Canada, New Zealand are doing it - just to name a few (you have to score enough points via English skills, skill set, and so on to get in their countries), why not the US?

I've been saying that for years - this program as well as some sort of accelerated citizenship/permanent residence for kids with student visa in Grad schools and more H1Bs with path to citizenship.

The last you want is give these people our best product, education, and send them back to China/India/wherever. Brain drain is not something we can afford.

iirc you always could buy your way in. Wasn't it that you had to agree to invest 1 million dollars in a US business?

A buddy in HS school did this. His dad came here to start a construction biz with like $3 million capital and he got a green card shazam.

Read the article techs, your answer is right there. I know, the article was pretty neutral, no Bush/Republicans bashing so it was a bit hard for you to digest. :D

Starting in 1990, 10,000 visas have been set aside each year for the EB-category. The program was designed to encourage foreign investors to create jobs by starting a new business or preserve jobs by investing in money-losing businesses. If they agree to invest $1 million, foreigners can get a visa, apply for green cards, and become conditional permanent residents.
After two years, provided they've made good on their promise to invest, created 10 jobs (family members don't count), and the business is still an ongoing concern, they can apply to have those conditions removed. And after five years with a green card, holders can apply for citizenship.
Of the 10,000 visas in the program, 3,000 are set aside for "targeted employment areas" -- rural areas, or places with an unemployment rate that's 150 percent or more of the national average. For these visas, the threshold is lowered to $500,000.

This is an excellent idea, give us your millionaires! The tired and the poor should piss off some where else, like Canada!

Seriously, only like 1/3 of the kids in my Grad school program were American, the rest were all on Visa. Last thing you want to do is educate them and send them home.

Sounds good to me. Canada has free health care anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem for them to absorb millions of Mexicans.

It's 500k and you have to hire at least 3 people or something like that. A friend of mine who is waiting in line for citizenship told me about it. He could afford it, but he doesn't want to run a business he just wants to work here.

Don't you know? They're all at hedge funds making millions and voting against the tax hikes

i've been taking this position here for years. what sense does it make to educate someone and then force them to go back to where ever they're from? better for the US that they're here working and paying US taxes than in india working.

may be too late for that, though.

This is actually pretty true. Or was for a while.
So in a country where something like 75% of the population is white, you're suggesting most of those white people are astoundingly wealthy aristocrats?

Come on brah. At least 2/3 of the grad students should be white. If not, das racisss.

So how are they supposed to get there?

We could use infrastructure stimulus money to build a secure Mexico to Canada corridor. Signs would say "Sorry, the US is full, please continue to Canada. They will greet you with open arms. ¡Que pase un buen día!".

Nah, no need for that. We'll just do some free advertising for the Canadian Tourist Board.

Move to Canada! Better Health Care! More Government Benefits!

Then just give them a free bus ticket. We could give every illegal in the country a Greyhound ticket for less than it costs us to build a bridge.

But my plan could provide shovel ready jobs for the unemployed for the next few years. :)
