You mean people aren't eating those rabbits they get for kids? 😵

Hasenpfeffer

6 -8 slices bacon, finely chopped
2 rabbits, wild if possible, otherwise domestic
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
3/4 cup red wine vinegar
1 cup chicken stock, preferably homemade
1 bay leaf

1 Heat the roaster or casserole over moderate heat and cook the bacon, stirring and turning it frequently, until crisp, about 10 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Set the pan with bacon fat aside for a few moments.

2 Cut the rabbit into serving pieces. Cut away and discard the belly meat.

3 Add the salt, pepper, and flour to a brown paper bag. Add a few rabbit pieces to the bag and shake to coat with flour mixture; repeat with remaining rabbit pieces.

4 Preheat the oven to 325°F.

5 Heat the reserved bacon fat in the pan over high heat until it sputters.

6 Brown the rabbit pieces on all sides, in batches; this should take about 10 minutes. Transfer them to a serving plate.

7 Pour off all but 2 tablespoon of fat and cook the onions in it until they are soft and translucent. Pour in the vinegar and chicken stock and add the bay leaf. Bring to a boil over high heat, scraping up any browned bits clinging to the bottom and sides of the pan.

8 Return the rabbit with juices to the roaster or casserole. Add the drained bacon. Cover the vessel tightly, and simmer for 1 1/2 hours, or until the rabbits are tender but not falling apart.

9 Serve the rabbit directly from the roaster or casserole, or arrange the pieces attractively on a heated platter.
reminds me of a classic

Rabbits actually make great pets, but they're somewhere between a dog and a cat in terms of the amount of physical upkeep and attention they need.

You'll need a cage/kennel that the rabbit can feel secure in, and it will typically pick a corner of this to use as its bathroom. (Like cats and, incidentally, rats, rabbits can be litter trained.) However, they are naturally curious and a little bit sociable, and will want to spend time outside the cage for exercise, meeting guests, snuggling, etc.

Meeting guests and snuggling? In my experience rabbits have absolutely no personality at all. They're as dumb as cows, and make about as good a pet as a cow. Maybe I've just been around the wrong breed or whatever.

-edit- I can confirm that here in SE Texas parents giving chicks/baby rabbit as easter presents is a pretty common thing. Pet shops and agricultural stores sell a ton of them.

No, but then again I've lived in an urban area all my life - not redneckland.

pfft. i live in "redneckland" (interesting how racial terms for whites is ok. but not for blacks eh?).

you don't see shit like what texes mentioned anymore. people know that the damn chick is going to grow up and turn ugly.

only time people do it is if they keep them anyway. I am seeing more and more people raising chickens and ducks. hell i seen a chicken coupe behind a nice house in chicago burbs a few weeks back. i was kinda surprised on that.

Date of the article does not matter.

Selling chicks and bunnies for easter has been going on for decades. Maybe you city dwellers do not see it as much as people who live in bumfuck nowhere.

Fixed.

Never heard of this in my life. 'Easter bunnies' are made of chocolate, guy.

Urbanites never fail to impress me with their ignorance.

It's prevalent around Dallas at least, and I do not condone giving animals as Easter gifts.

 I remember when they invented chocolate.

And I've never heard of this either. Must be a redneck hick thing.

Oh, and what's a feed store? Is that like a pet store?
Nice attempt at stereotyping, but: Nope. Never heard of an abandoned pet rabbit here in GA. Every person I've ever known with rabbits treated them as real family pets and took on the responsibility or used them for an intended purpose (snake food, for example). When I was in San Diego, where you live, however, the Humane Society had tons of them turned in by irresponsible people with buyer's remorse (In particular: Rancho Coastal Humane Society, where I got my dog on December 26th, 2011). The reason it's more common in urban areas is because few can raise it indoors until a natural death, though my Uncle and Aunt in Carlsbad did. At least those people were responsible enough not to abandon them in the wild, but I am sure a lot of others did.

I had several pet rabbits as a kid myself. The rural issues were dogs. Packs of neighborhood dogs plagued me when I had rabbits in hutches outside. I remember one night when they managed to get under the enclosures (we had underpinning) and a few babies were missing toes and legs the next morning (pulled through the mesh). 🙁

a feed store is a please to buy food for animals. Some you can order animals.

not a pet store but close.

Indeed. That's where I got my pet Mallards. 🙂

Texas's retardation is not our fault.

It's a shame Mexico exists...Texas needs more ocean, so it can properly tie with Florida and California on the 'please fall off of America and sink into the ocean' scale.

How do you explain a San Diegan (Jules) for being ignorant of it in San Diego County? SoCal != Texas.

I don't think anyone gifts animal anymore, maybe in southern Italy.
Plus it can be okay if you're willing to take care of them yourself if the kids lose interest.

Meh, I've lived in cities all my life and at least heard of it. Nobody I know ever actually gave or received one. Sounds like an all around terrible idea. (Animals as gifts in general are terrible ideas.)

Just because you live in a basement does not mean everyone else does.

What is your location phucheneh? I bet I can find easter chicks or bunnies for sale in your area.

I bet I can find an Asian transsexual prostitute in your area. Doesn't mean you all partake of his/her services.

I have no idea what you are trying to say here. I was just saying that I was sad that a rising ocean would not properly swallow up Texas.

All the ones I got as a child grew up and eventually died of old age. Would have been nice if they had died before getting old and cranky. I can't count how many times my easter chick (which grew into a rather ornery rooster) drew blood by pecking me as I tried to feed him.

so this only seems to be "normal" in bumfuck parts of texas, yet everyone else is wrong.

GOTCHA.

as much as i enjoy bitching about texes he is not really wrong.

it does happen. is as common now? not that i see.

I have seen ads around the burbs of Chicago area listing chicks and bunnies for Easter. Also as CZroe said pet shelters will be full of rabbits in a matter of months.

the good news is people are getting smarter and not doing this shit as much.

WRONG.

“Easter bunnies grow up,” says Shelly, a San Diego House Rabbit Society volunteer. She prefers not to publish her last name and is private about the number of rabbits she currently fosters for fear of running afoul of zoning regulations in her Spring Valley neighborhood. “When Easter bunnies grow up, they get dumped,” she says.

Love being ignorant. GOTCHA.

No. You said it was Texas' retardation AFTER I pointed out that it is NOT Texas and is a problem in the very places people are denying it. It's another nicely failed attempt to stereotype. I pointed out San Diego. SoCal != Texas.
